Gate checking a stroller - size limit?

Is there a limit as to how big of a stroller you can gate check? Can you gate check a tandem double stroller? I thought I remembered they had to be lightweight to be gate checked, but want to verify.

I'm flying Delta & their site says:

You may check child restraint seats and fully collapsible strollers. They do not count toward your allowance of two checked baggage items. Other infant items do count toward the two checked bag allowance.

Child restraint seats and strollers may be used to transport your child throughout the airport. Strollers must be checked at the gate by a Delta agent. Space permitting, you may use any adjacent unoccupied seat to secure the child restraint seat. However, if an empty seat is not available the seat must be checked at the gate by a Delta agent

But I'm not sure what they mean by "fully collapsible "

TIA!

I know the rule about assuming things, but I am assuming that it wouldn't be a problem. I am hoping to do the same thing with our double on USAir

My kids just flew Delta and yes, they gate checked a double stroller w/no problem. They have also done so on AirTRan, NW & SWA.

"Fully collapsible" means that you don't have to dissassemble it to fold it. An example of a stroller that does NOT qualify for gate-check would be the Peg Perego Triplette (http://www.dmartstores.com/tripganbypeg.html); in order to fold the frame, you must first remove the seats. The seats are too large to be taken aboard as carryons; they don't squash down, and they won't fit in the overheads. Full-size old-style baby "carriages" can't be gate-checked, either; same reason.

Jogging strollers that do not fold unless the wheels are removed also fall into this category. However, most airlines will take the frame if you carry the wheels as a carryon; I know people who use a cloth laundry bag to carry on the wheels.

I gate checked my Jeep double stroller with no problem on Delta

When we flew with DD as a baby and toddler we always took her full size Graco stroller. It folded all the way down but was not lightweight at all and we never had a problem gate checking it. I think you'll be fine.

I flew Delta Song from mco to bdl on 8/2 and there were 3 strollers that had been gate checked. I just happened to be sitting in a window seat and could see the gate attendant giving the strollers to the baggage handler and instead of walking them down the stairs, she threw them down to him. He let them smash onto the ground. I couldn't believe it. My son is old enough that I don't need a stroller anymore, but I would have been really upset if one of those was my stroller.

When you gate check the stroller, do they have it ready for you at the arriving gate when you get off?

Yes, they do...When we gate checked, they had it right at the plane's exit door. We just unfolded it, and headed up the 'tunnel' into the airport-Very convenient!
