Gate 13

If there's a line at a gate, disregard the fact that the sign might say "closed." Many people will avoid these lines for fear of then having to turn around and go to the back of another line, yet whenever I've been in these lines (admittedly on a Saturday) they've always opened, sometimes changing the sign just minutes before the official park opening.

Thanks for akll this info fellow disney fans. I have heard of the book before, but was never inclinded to buy it, didnt know what it consisted of. I just order my copy (brand new by the way) on half.com for $9.58!! What a deal!!

Hi All!

Just back from a week at Disney and wanted to let everyone know that the "Gate 13 and 20" theory is true. For a regular opening we ended up in line for Gate 20 with a tree in the middle of where the line would be. When people began being admitted, our line shot forward as both 19 and 20 opened and people split between the two.

On the Magic Morning we lined up at 13, with the same tree obstacle in front of us. When the gates opened, the line moved very quickly.

It works!

I didn't finish reading the thread so I don't know if your question was answered yet or not, but I just finished reading the Unoffical Guide to DL.

The reason they suggest Gate 13 is because Gate 14 adjacent to it is blocked by a tree preventing the formation of a line. Thus the line from Gate 13 is handled by both Gates 13 and 14 making it move twice as quickly as the others. Hope that helps!

Hi everyone, we're back and here is what I found out.

On our Magical Morning (Sunday) we used gate 13. Our MM started at 7, so we were there about 6:40. About 10th in line? About 10 minutes after we got there and before they opened the park to us the lines were VERY long so it's true to get there early. As soon as the gates opened I jumped into the new as of yet unformed line at 14, we were first in and through it, we raced to Nemo and got on the first sub (A shout out to Molly who told us to go for it, I'm so glad we did it on our MM day and not on Monday with regular 10 a.m. park opening with so many more people to battle--Nemo didn't get going until about 7:20 but better to wait 20 minutes and know you are on the first sub)...

Monday morning we got there about 9:15 for 10 a.m. opening. The lines were all already really long. So, we were going to get in line at 13, when I thought, you know, why are we all lemmings? If there are two numbers and two lines under each "entrance" sign, why not just get in line at 14 from the get-go? So we made our own line at 14, and sure enough, that turnstile opened at the same time as the turnstile for 13. We didn't cut in front of anyone, because there IS a turnstile there and a CM running that turnstile. I don't understand why just one line forms before the park opens and then it's two lines as soon as the gates open. I really don't get this. There is no sign anywhere saying "form one line, it WILL become two eventually"...? No CMs came over and told us to beat it. No patrons gave us dirty looks or said anything.

Because of this, we were AT the rope...and the first ones through the castle...and the first ones on Peter Pan that day. And because a line DOES form there once the gate opens, with its own CM, it really is a line that just hadn't formed yet and you aren't cheating anyone in my opinion, just being smart about queueing.

So, my suggestion to you all is be smart and be the starter of your own line! (Of course, I suppose there is a chance that they won't man all the turnstiles, but it was a risk I was absolutely willing to take.)

Sorry, I'm going to threadjack for a minute. My next DL trip isn't until Sept 2009 :sad1: I was looking at the Unofficial guide on Amazon and noticed that it said 2008 on it and there is also a 2007 and a 2006 edition, so my question is, should I wait for the 2009 edition, or are they pretty much the same thing every year?????

There's one every year to update prices, new attractions, closures, new busy days and such. ;)

What an interesting thing about line 13 and 20. I'll have to try that next time we go ;)

He updates every year, but I have noticed that while he has a lot of great advice, he's not completely accurate on everything. Some things need to be updated, some "updates" aren't accurate. However, much of it stays the same, because much of the basic info stays the same, year to year. I really enjoyed the book and was glad I bought it. Good source of info and maps. I guess I'd wait for the 2009; you've got plenty of time. It'll probably be out in October or so.

For another source, I've kind of enjoyed playing around with RideMax, the downloadable software that plans out your itineraries for you. It costs $15 for a 3 months subscription, and they update monthly. They have a really good "tips and tricks" section that sort of condenses a lot of the Unofficial Guide's tips, and it also says a lot of the same stuff as Hydroguy's wonderful "tips and tricks" sticky thread here on the Dis.

The UG doesn't change too much from year to year, but between the '07 and '08 the UG greatly improved its dining section, and it added a list about the walking times for hotels. In the '08 edition, the UG asked for reader feedback about dining, so the dining section in '09 should be even better. The '09 edition should be out in Sept. '08, and IMO it would be worth it to wait. The ride descriptions can be unhelpful, as they tend to make mountains out of molehills. IMO these ride descriptions at wdwinfo are much better: http://www.wdwinfo.com/disneyland/disneyland-theme-parks.htm#gold-disneyland-themeparks . And be sure to check out the HydroGuy Tips Compilation at the top of this forum. In many ways, they're much better than the UG. And in many ways the DIS is also much better than the UG! :wizard:

BOT, this has been a great thread about Gate 13 and Gate 20! :goodvibes

I would wait. I believe the new edition comes out around August of each year for the following year. If nothing else, the 2008 version may end up being cheaper once the 09 one comes out.

Also, there is a Passporter for Disneyland, but it was published in 2006. A new version was supposed to come out in February but it got pushed back to this summer (of course, it could get pushed back again). A search for it on Amazon states I can pre-order it for $22.95 and the publish date is Aug 15, 2008.

I was wondering that too. My guess is that it doesn't since you have to form a line at the security tables instead of the turnstiles, if I read everything on here correctly.

Yes...sometimes. On busy days all gates are open and lines tend to be shortest by the planters and shortest in the middle- making 13 a good choice.

When I was there in September (aka the off-season) they didn't open three of the gates in the morning. One of the gates that they didn't open was 13. I only know this because I was the first person in line at gate 14...and the CM gave me the semi-unpleasant job of telling all the of the excited people who thought they'd just discovered a gate with no line that it wasn't opening that morning. I don't remember the other gates that didn't open, but I think they were also behind planters.

Best solution of all if you want to beat the lines? Get there early, read the signs which indicate which lines are open, and be right at the front. 30-40 minutes before park opening (or before MM on MM days) got me to the front of the line every day. Show up at park opening and it isn't going to make a huge difference which line you pick. All will be long (though all will move pretty fast).

Just saw the note about security. Advice is still the same. Get to the park 30-40 minutes before opening. Line up first at the security table (be front of the pack there). You'll be one of the first through security and have your pick of spots to line up for the park.

We were there a couple of weeks ago and got in line next to one of the Magical Morning lines. Right before park opening a CM came by and changed the lines to regular entrance lines, so we were able to jump right over into a shorter line.

We were there a week last summer and used gate 13 most everyday. We had no magic moringing so this was regular opening. Somedays they opened gate 14 and the line split in two. Other days they never opened 14 so line 13was just like any other. You have to be careful as someone pointed out. We figured we may as well stand in line 13 since it had a chance of being shorter.

It worked once for us when we were there in November on a regular entry day. I am with the pp, it is worth trying if you have to get in a line anyways.

Here's my line trick:

On MM days, the MM line switches over to a regular line just prior to park opening. DH stood in the "regular line" right next to the MM gate because he didn't believe me. But as soon as it switched over maybe 5 minutes before park opening I was first in line.

No, even if there's been a line at the security tables, they will still avoid the lines that seem to be hidden. They will follow the leader and avoid being first in line.
