Gas Shortages

We went out to eat earlier today and on the way there we passed a gas station that actually had gas; oh my gosh. There were people sitting on their cars waiting, but the thing that shocked me most was seeing the signs "Will work for gas."

I sure hope we get some fuel in soon.

Why is there a shortage in Destin, FL? Where else is gas in short supply? Our gas prices actually went down.

Not trying to be ugly, but you've got to be kidding me right??? Gas shortages are all through the Northwest FL, MS, AL, and of course LA. FL has had tankers come in the last 3 days, but as soon as they do, people panic fill up and empty out the gas stations again. There's a shortage in Destin FL because of where our gas comes from AND because of the evacuees in the area getting gas here because they can't get it where they are from

Forgive me if I seemed rude, but I thought most knew of the gas shortages because of Katrina.

How much of that shortage is caused by people hoarding gas because they JUST THINK there MAY BE a shortage?

Viking, you hit the nail on the head.

People are constantly topping off, or in some cases (in my area, central AL) buying and filling 55 gal drums. Hoarding and greed is a terrible thing, if people would just use common sense, buy gas when they need it, and buy what they need, I guarantee you, we would not be seeing these gas stations run out.

Guilty - I top off every couple of days because the price is going up so fast. I'd rather pay $3.00/gallon for 5 gallons than $3.25 for 20 gallons. But we haven't seen gas shortages up here, at least not on base.

Our local news was trying to explain the gas shortage this weekend. Apparently, at any given time, 2/3 of the city's gas supply is actually in the tanks of cars. That leaves about 1/3 in the tanks at gas stations. When people start freaking out, unnecessarily topping off every day and hoarding gas, the stations run out.

Exactly. The middle of last week there were shortages around here because people panicked. The panic passed and this weekend all gas stations had gas.

In teh western suburbs of Orlando the situation improved over the weekend, there are still scattered shortages of higher grades.

It doesn't sound like a problem in your area, but what about the people that really need the gas?

Is there a site that shows where gas shortages are? We leave in 9 days to go to Destin and would really like to know if we will be able to find gas on the way.

Thanks!!

I'm in Silverhill, Alabama, which is about 30 miles east of Pensacola. We've has shortages here since last week. I don't consider keeping one's gas tank topped off "hoarding," I consider it smart and prudent! :cool1:

My h called this morning and told me that the BP station about five miles away from here has gas. . .not a single car at the pumps, either!

We had a station here get gas yesterday. I was driving by as they started pulling the plastic off the dispensers and prices were going up on the sign. Cars were waiting. I think more has come in today. We just needed to "catch" up with the demand.

I strongly disagree. If you need gas, ie you are on a 1/4 or so, by all means fill up, but if you are on 3/4 of tank are more you are just falling into panic mode. which does nothing but cause more panic.

Just use common sense.

Not here in Pensacola. We're short, and we're seeing huge lines when stations are open. It's like the Pied Piper when a fuel truck comes into town. An article in the paper said it was partially due to the disruption in supply from the hurricane and partially because we're getting people from Alabama and Mississippi, even Louisiana looking for gas. Many stations, when they're open, are limiting you to $20 so more people can get some. Our school district is so short on diesel that they are saying they will have to cancel classes unless they get a shipment within a few days.

Our shortage is real, not caused by scared people hoarding gas.

And I'm with blowinbubbles. It's prudent to keep your car filled during hurricane season.

I'm not sure what you mean...supplies in other areas aren't dependent on supplies to this area or vice versa.

I strongly disagree. ;) My filling up has nothing to do with being in panic mode, it has to do with saving a little bit of money. And since 9/11, I've always tried to pay attention and not let my tank get below 1/2 full, below 1/4 full if I notice it and have time to stop and fill up.

I was totally unaware of supply problems in other parts of the country! Our media says nothing and our prices keep going down (it went under 3 dollars this morning). We even had boaters on the lakes this weekend! :confused3
