Okay, with snow falling my 8yo DD has abandoned our house for next door. They have the fireplace working ;)

I quess we could break down and turn it on but need some instructions as we've never used it. Our old house had a wood burning fireplace and we didn't like to bother with that. I used it to put candles in.

We have a gas fireplace now. It has gas logs and one of those key things. The chimney should be okay, we had it cleaned before we moved in 1 1/2 years ago but haven't had a fire.

Anyone care to let me know if I should attempt it or leave well enough alone and don't mess with it.

Ooooooooo! Good luck! I looked at another home in this neighborhood back when I bought this one. The other had a fireplace and much lower ceilings. When it was just me and my realtor (who is also DS's Godfather), he asked me...if I were to move in, what's the first thing I would do. I said...knock out that fireplace! You practically bumped into the side wall of it as you went in the front door. No fireplaces for me! Hope yours works okay if you decide to use it. :teeth:

hehehehe...

If I remember correctly, open that flu (sp) thingy, have matches ready (preferably the long ones), turn the key which starts the flow of gas, quickly light. Turning the key after lighting will adjust the flame.

I LOVE our gas fireplace! Rhonda is right. Open the flue first. I am a little wary of flames near gas, so I usually light a long fireplace match, and put it under the logs before I turn the gas on. Once the gas comes on, the fire should start right away. Adjust it by turning the key. It's so much faster than building a fire with wood.

No long fireplace matches, I think we have one of those lighters for the grill. That should work.

We have one and I LOVE it!

You could always do what I do. Make dh light it. :teeth:

Well? Is it lit or do I need to jump in the car and come light that sucker for you? :p

Tried that Lisa, didnt' work ;)

Maybe that's an idea Rhonda :smooth:

I'm trying to figure out how to open the flu , maybe I'll get it lit sometime today

You LUCKY!!!! We had a gas fireplace in Calif and I LOVED IT!...cheap fuel and kept the room nice and toasty....we're back to the real thing and I must admit....I really, really miss my GAS fireplace!...The convience is the best!

We have a regular wood fireplace. Luckily it does a good job of keeping the living room nice and toasty. Since it has been in the 40's down here all day, it has been cranking out the warmth.

I am getting a gas fire place installed in about 10 days! (If you saw my earlier post, that is why I was looking for the furniture sliders) I have always wanted one so we are splurging. It is a vent free, no chimney needed. I can't wait to be warm and toasty!!
