If you're looking to use them indoors on a treadmill, obviously the GPS feature wont help you. Most of them also have an optional piece that tracks your cadence (usually a small chip that attaches to your shoe). The watch should calibrate it, or give you the option of doing so. On smooth terrain at a steady pace it will be fairly accurate.
