I went out and got a Gramin Forerunner 305 with heart rate. However the heart rate on the screen is so small that I can only see it with my reading glasses on and I don't want to wear them when I run. Does anyone know if you can make it display bigger on the screen? I set the heart rate zones and that works well, however I wish I could see the actual rate better. :confused3

I have my HR set on the running screen on my 305. You can change the number of data fields displayed on each of the 3 available screens. Selecting only 1 data field will make the display as large as possible. You should be able to change the number of fields displayed by selecting: Settings> General> Data Fields> Running.

Thanks I got it. I could'nt find where it would put it in the box ,but thought if you did it must be somewhere, so I finally found it.

Not so much related to this topic, but a general Garmin Forerunner question.

Up to this point, I have worn my trusty old Timex Ironman Triathlon (this is probably my 3rd or 4th, at least, over the last couple of decades) and basically just estimated my distance/pace/heartrate. I wore a Polar heartrate monitor at one point, but it died years ago.

So, my question is, with the goals I have of losing weight, which I am doing, and getting faster on my half marathon, how would having a Garmin help? Would it be worth the $150 or so to have it?

Micheal -

I have a 305 w/the HR monitor & I do not use it. At all (the HR monitor). HR varies a lot with the individual & I find that mine (for some reason) is really high when I train.

What I do is use the "Rate of Perceived Exertion" (or RPE). You can easily find it in the web.

It goes something like this......... If I'm am running and can sing, I'm going WAY too slow. If I'm running and can't sing, but can talk in full sentences, I'm going a little bit too slow. If I'm running and can talk in short phrases, that's about the right pace & if I'm running and can only say a word or 2, or not speak at all, I'm going too hard.

This seems top work for me, & I know some really good, fast runners who use this also.
