Garmin 305 and 405 question

I recently bought the 305. I have since returned it because I found it to be bulky and too big for my wrist (I'm a short 5' lady). My DH refused to use it and said it bothered him because it was too big for him as well. We're now looking into the 405. My question, though, is that the 305 didn't give us an average pace but what the pace was at the exact moment. I'm assuming we just need to set it different to do the average (honestly didn't mess with it much and only ran once using it to see what we thought). Am I correct in this assumption? Will the 405 do the average pace so that when I'm done, it'll calculate what my average for the run was? I absolutely love having the time and distance we've done on the screen and if it'll give me an average pace, then I'm all set to get it. Thanks for any input.

Here is a quick list of the data fields that my 305 can list (though not all at once):

Cadence
Cadence - Avg
Cadence - Lap
Calories
Date
Distance
Distance - Lap
Distance - Last Lap
Distance - Paused
Elevation
GPS Accuracy
Grade
Heading
Heart Rate
Heart Rate - Avg
Heart Rate - Lap
Heart Rate Zone
Laps
Speed
Speed - Avg
Speed - Lap
Speed - Last lap
Speed - Max
Speed Zone
Sunrise
Sunset
Time
Time - Avg Lap
Time - Lap
Time - Last lap
Time - Paused
Time of Day

For my outdoor runs, I usually display Time, Speed, Time of Day, and Distance. AFAIK, the 405 should be able to do as you ask - the 305 can as well, but if you don't like wearing it, it wouldn't be much use to you.

I found the 305 bulky too so I run with it on the inside of my wrist- way more comfy and it is visable with the natural swing of the arm.

I have the 405cx and absolutely love it..well except for the size of it.... The inside of wrist is a great trick that I also use often... But after a few runs - i forget that its there and just value the information it gives...

I use the 405 with heart rate monitor.

After each run, I plug in my USB Ant stick, and upload all my information to Connect Garmin. It shows you your route (satellite overhead), pace, elevation, etc.

You can also put a separate program on your computer, if you don't want to upload it to Connect Garmin. I haven't used this option, but it is there.

For those who have a 405, be sure to update your software. A new release came out at the end of June.

after every mile the garmin will beep and display your pace for that previous mile. i believe the 305 is the same as the 405 when it comes to that.

Also the 405cx comes with a smaller wrist band than the 305 and original 405!

I received my refurbished Garmin 405 in the mail today. They replaced my original due to battery charging issues. :thumbsup2

Attention Garmin 405 users. There is a software problem with the latest upgrade for the ANT+ stick. If you haven't already upgraded, don't.

It caused my 405 to not be able to upload workouts to Garmin Connect website. Also causing battery drain problems.

So I contacted Garmin, and they responded with telling me to delete the software I have now, and re-install a previous version. They sent me the file by email. So if anyone needs it, shoot me a email.

Jeff, I updated my software for the 405, but not the ANT Stick, I am not having any issue that I can see with downloading to the computer or the Garmin Connect site. I am also not having issues with it holding a charge. So I guess I am ok.
