Back in the day...with the old switchboard operators the ALPHA characters were used (instead of the numbers) to determine what area/local phone center you are from. There was no instant call tracking or tracing then. So if you called to have your Phone line serviced and said you number is IN2-5984, they knew where dispatch the "IN" Service calls too.
If you said your # was 462-5984...the "46" could be anywhere. Once things were automated there was no longer a need for the Alpha part.
