Garden Grocer Expiration Problems

Has anyone had any problems with receiving expired (or not so fresh) items from Garden Grocer?

We arrived last week on July 3rd (at night) and received 2 items that were expiring within a couple days (shredded beef that expired on the 6th and a salad kit expiring on the 5th). This was the third time I've used the service and am kinda ticked at this point - they already charge a premium on the items, a high delivery fee, and request a tip for three different people then insult me by delivering items that are at/near expiration.

Was this anomaly or has anyone else had this problem? How is We Go Shop in regards to freshness?

Thanks for your input.

We rent a car for the day, go shopping, eat off property and never get expired food.

First - I have never used Garden Grocer so I can not help you with regards to them specifically. Generally however, items like Fresh Beef and Produce do not have "EXPIRATION" dates. What you likely saw were "Sell-by" dates. A "Sell-by" date is used to ensure freshness to the consumer and generally allows for a week or so for consumption after purchase before the product would be no longer "Fresh". So I would not have gotten too upset over that.

Paying a delivery fee and then being "requested" to tip THREE people in addition to that however would not sit well with me either. I would not be giving a company like that any of my business.

Why did you have to tip 3 people? I have never been asked to tip anybody...it's always been a personal choice.
I never received anything expired from Garden Grocer, but I did once get the wrong item. I called right away and they offered to deliver the correct item or just give me a credit...I chose the credit.

The three people they are requesting tip for are the: Shopper, Order Preparer and the Driver.

Personally at home I'll assess my sell buy/use by dates and use per discretion but when it comes to some items - especially veggies (the salad kit) - by the date listed it is looking pretty sad. In this case, they charge a premium for the groceries then a $14 delivery fee and request tips for 3 of their employees. I'm fine if they want to offer a credit but with 2 separate items delivered with those dates - I'm not too happy with their service right now, it just seems either cheap or lazy.

I see some people use We Go Shop around here - how has this service worked for everyone?

Never had an issue with expired food or requesting a tip for three people. We end up tipping the delivery guys but that is our decision and never requested to...smjj

Complain to them direct they seem to have good customer service

We have never been asked to tip in fact we were never in when our food was delivered it was left at bell services. We also ordered over $200 so delivery was $2.

Was it the delivery guy who asked you for the triple tip? If so I would call and complain to the owner, because that is not normal procedure.

We use gardengrocer all the time when at WDW.
We just usually put a one time GG tip at check out in the tip box ;) Usually $5 or so.
Then we do tip the bell services person from the resort that actually brings the delivery to our room.

Never had a problem with dates.
fresh produce is usually a sell by date to ensure freshness.
I will keep using them.

I would try wegoshop, but doing my own list is confusing for me. I am on the other side of the country and wouldn't know how to ask for the brands and some of the items I want.
Any suggestions from people on that?

I've used GG many times and will continue to do so. We have never had a problem with any of our food including milk. We dont have a problem with leaving a tip at online checkout either. They are just letting you know who the tip will go to in case you were wondering. I don't recall them requesting I tip anyone let alone 3 people? It's a spot I can fill in or leave blank that's all.

We have only used garden grocer in the past and never had issues with food being near the expiration date.

We also have never had anyone request a tip. Like the PP there is a spot for an optional tip when you check out online but that is the only time it was mentioned.

GG has been around for a long time and has an excellent reputation ... PLEASE contact them and let them know your concerns and tell them what you want to resolve the issue to your satisfaction.

The triple tipping sound fishy ....

Please give them the opportunity to resolve the problem.

We have used GG about 2 years ago and thought the service was excellent. No problems with expiration dates, but we mostly had dairy items ( which have longer exp dates).

We have used We Go Shop 3 different times, never used GG. I prefer WGS because of the flexibility in what I can order. I have them go to Walmart because I know exactly what the carry so I can specify brands and sizes. They shop according to my list the day of my arrival. Maybe GG is delivering from a stock they have on hand and therefore may have older product they need to use up? I really don't know, just a guess.

We have been nothing but pleased with WGS. Amy always calls to confirm the order and ask any questions she may have before the shopping trip, and then she calls again as soon as she delivers it to bell services. One time we were at the airport in Chicago waiting to board and she called to let us know she had put our beer in the fridge and it would be nice and cold when we arrived. DH couldn't have been happier! She also includes the original cash register receipt so you can see exactly what everything cost. Last time we gave late notice and she wasn't able to make a trip to Walmart, but a lot of the things on our list were on sale B1G1F at the store she went to (maybe Publix?) so we got the sale price!

What is the best way to do this? We have a trip coming up for 1 day at AKV before and after a cruise. We want to do a trip for adult beverages to take on board, and then take the disney bus to the port.

I've never cruised with Disney but the couple companies that I have dealt with limit the alcohol type and amount you can bring on board.Princess I was only allowed two bottles of wine. You have to get creative if you want to try and sneak it on board. My husband used a listerine bottle... he couldn't drink all the way to the bottom because it tasted horrible :rotfl:

Disney cruises allow you to bring any amount of unopened alcohol on board in your carry on. You must carry it on. If its in checked baggage they remove it and hold it until you get off.

A lot of private transportation companies will pick you up at WDW do a liquor store run and bring you to port!

I have used GG a couple of times and have been pleased - this time we are ordering a large order, like $500 worth, for a 8 night stay for 7 people.

We will still end up eating out once a day for most days but wanted to cover water, adult bevvies, snacks, bfasts, some lunch things and 3-4 dinners worth of food. I figure on a couple of days we will do a bfast outing (CP is my fave, and I want to try AK's Restaurantsaurus), and on those days we will cook dinner, and then the reverse when we have bfast in the villa we will most likely do a lunch or dinner out.

So my issue is since it is such a large order, and they do split the tip 3 ways (they don't ask for 3 tips, they just want you to be aware that your tip just doesn't go to the delivery driver), what would be an appropriate amount? If I do the 15-20% it would be almost $100! :scared1:

I was thinking $30....am I cheap?

we haven't used GG (we just rent a car and buy our "stuff"), but i think at least $50 (10%). personally, we would likely tip $100, but then again, we prefer to overtip :)
a $500 order takes a lot more time & work than a $50 order, so i would base it on the dollar amount of the order.

yes, you do make a good point. At this rate I almost think it would be beneficial to grab a cab while the rest of the family have some downtime or pool time and go to the super Walmart to get our own stuff. :scratchin
