Coders for cartridge based games had to be very clever with their programming. They had very limited space to deal with. Case in point: the N64. Released after the PlayStation. Used cartridges, not the industry standard CD-ROM. So instead of having 700MB to play with, they had a maximum of 64MB. And many games had better visuals than their PlayStation and Saturn counterparts. Clever coders!

Limitations breed creativity. The games wouldn't be what they are if not for them. Honestly, Super Mario Bros. still holds up well today, but how many recent games, that have very few limitations, do you go back and play over and over again? Sure, there are some good games, but will people still be playing them avidly in 40 years? I bet people will still be playing Super Mario Bros.!
