I guess a reminder that all natural bodies of water have bacteria, and levels fluctuate, duh. More importantly, the OP should NOT be planning to swim in December because the water will be COLD!! Beach season there is April-Sept, maybe March and Oct for the dedicated.[/QUOTE]
This article is from yesterday. Bacteria in Galveston waters is an ongoing problem. There are actually signs on the beach there but they are not very visible. Lots of people swim in Galveston waters and that's grest. If I had no experience with Galveston, I would want to know of the bacterial issues so I do not go walk on the shoreline before a cruise, especially if there is a person in my party with diabetes or any auto immune issues. I do not think you need to be so dismissive. The OP said she had no knowledge of the port. If I asked that, I would want any information about the port people might have. Galveston beaches are not like Florida beaches, they have more bacteria. Just an FYI. No big deal.

I would not spend the night around the airport, there is really nothing around IAH or HOU. Unless you are arriving really late and just want to go to bed right away.

We spent a night at San Luis resort last Christmas. We parked our car there for a week and took their shuttle to the port. The hotel was nice and we loved their Christmas decorations. The room was comfortable and all rooms are facing ocean.
We did have a problem with the shuttle bus when we returned. We just waited forever...while watching the shuttle buses from the other hotels came and went. I am not sure if this was normal for them, or they just had a problem that day.

It could be warm, or chilly and windy in December... Pleasure Pier is not crowded on cold and windy days, but I would not risk getting sick by staying out there for hours before the cruise. Like others recommended, Moody Gardens is a nice place. The rain forest, aquarium, and 3D/4D theaters are all indoors. If the weather is nice, you might enjoy the Holiday lights decorations outside. They should have an ice skating rink too.

Enjoy your cruise! I wish I had 2017 Dec cruise in plan too!
