Can somebody tell me about Galena? I live it St. Louis and we are thinking about taking a weekend(only one night) girls trip there. Has anyone ever drove from St. Louis? I was wondering how far it is, and what is the best way to get there. I check mapquest and it looks like a long way around, just wondering if it is the best way.

Need hotel ideas also and places to eat. Thank you for all your help!

I can't tell you how to get there from St Louis as we live in Chicago but it is a charming little town. IMO, a day or day and a half is plenty of time. The town has little shops and you can go see where Grant lived, that is nicely done, but there isn't much more right there.

It is scenic and the shops are fun to look in. IIRC, they have a festival during the holidays so that might be fun to go to, also. There is a riverboat casino across the river in Iowa and it is pretty to drive around the countryside.

In terms of how to get there, try going to googlemaps and making your trip from St Louis to Macomb Il to Galena, that route seems more straight forward. The other way seems to take you way far east, just for the sake of being able to go on I55.

Have a nice weekend!

Thank you for your information. Do you know if there is other shopping close to Galana? We would like to go to those little shops but would also like a mall. I will check out some different maps, the one on mapquest just looks out of the way.

We live about 45 minutes east of Galena. It is a beautiful little gem and you can get more information by visiting www.galena.org or calling the Visitors Bureau at 877-464-2536. There is a mall and all the national chain stores and eateries just over the Mississippi in Dubuque Iowa. Galena is usually featured in the Midwest Living magazine, for dining, wine, golfing, historical attractions, etc. and is no longer a well-kept secret. I'd say you're looking at a 7 hour trip-- give yourself longer than a weekend to enjoy. The town is located in a geographically significant area of Illinois as well. Have a wonderful time! We are so very fortunate to be able to enjoy it often :thumbsup2

Oh, one more thing:surfweb: ditch the mapquest website for directions. www.randmcnally.com is SO much more efficient and reliable. After all, who prints all the atlases and maps we use!

I've never been there, but I just got out my Illinios map. If I were to go, I would take 55 up to Lincoln. Take 155 to Peoria, hop on 74 through Galesburg, then up North towards Moline. Then take 84 up to Galena. Is that what Mapquest said? It might look out of the way, but it's much better to stay on the interstate as much as you can. I really don't see any other way other than taking small side roads which would take forever. And even then, there's not a good direct route.

Awww....Galena, IL.....brings back memories....

When I was growing up we went camping at Palace Campground at least once per year....usually more...

Then when I was older I went on a couple camping trips with the Explorer scouts (coed boyscout group) during a boy scout weekend pow wow they would have anually.....

I wish we still lived in IL so I could share that with the girls....

We were in Galena exactly 10 years ago today!! Kinda funny! My (now) DH and I had begun dating a little while before then and decided to go away for a nice weekend before I started my new job. We rented a house in Eagle Ridge, it was great!!! They also have a lodge there, and I believe a spa, plus horse back riding, and of course, the shops in town. But renting the house was really nice since we could have a little more privacy. And I don't mean that just in the romantic way, we bought some groceries and cooked at least 1 dinner, then a few little things.

I don't think that there are any real malls that close. Rockford may be the closest, which is at least an hour away, I think.
