GAD upgrade question

I purchased a 7 day package with only a 1 day MYW ticket for 6 of us. We each have a GAD voucher. What would be cheaper? 1) Upgrade my GAD voucher to a 6 day pass, and use my 1 day package myw ticket for the last day or 2) upgrade my MYW 1 day ticket to a 7 day pass before I go on my vacation. Then I'd use my GAD voucher for the FP option.

Thanks

The current value of a GAD ticket is $79 plus tax. Thge value of one day on a pass of more than four days is only $3. Since you cannot combine the value of two tickets, you would effectively be throwing away $76 (plus tax) to use two separate tickets on the same trip.

And if you are going after the beginning of August, I would suggest you lock in the full price of your ticket now. For the last several years ticket prices have gone up in early August, so if you wait until you get to WDW to do the upgrade, you will get credit for the one day ticket at the new price but have to pay the difference on the new price of the ticket you are upgrading to.

Okay, Chesire. So to get this straight, you think it would be a better deal for me to just uprade my package 1 day ticket to a 7day before I go, our trip is in July, and then use the GAD voucher for FP? Thanks a bunch!

Another question: Should I wait to go to Guest Relations to upgrade tickets to 7 day, or do it from home via telephone? I read your FAQ and you said I may get misinformation from MS or DRC.

Yes, it is a better deal to upgrade to a 7-day and use the GAD vouchers for FPs. As Cheshire Figment said, it is only $3 more per ticket to go from 6- days to 7 days. Having the extra FPs would be worth more than $3 to me, at least.

Since you are going before the usual August price increase, it doesn't really matter. If you wait to upgrade until you get there, you don't have to pay for the increased ticket price until then. Since you are within 45 days, you will have to pay the difference now if you call to change your package.

Alternatively, if you plan to return to Disney soon, you can upgrade the GAD vouchers to the tickets you need and save the package tickets for another trip. You can upgrade the package tickets when you go again. It doesn't cost any more or less now, but it gives you a head start on tickets for the next trip.

Any idea how much it will cost me to upgrade from my package 1 day myw ticket to a 7 day? Thank you so much! With a package it is hard to tell what I actually paid for the 1 day ticket b/c there is no breakdown. I can't just price a 7day ticket on the website b/c I don't know how much credit I'll get for the 1day.

A one-day base ticket (no hopper or water parks) is 84.14 for adults with tax and 72.42 for kids with tax. A seven day adult base ticket is 249.21, so it would cost 165.07 to upgrade an adult one-day to an adult base 7-day. A child 7-day base ticket is 214.07, so it would cost 141.65 to upgrade each child ticket.

Adding the hopper option or the water parks option is 55.38 per ticket, adult or child, regardless of the length of the ticket.

So the price is the same for a 1 day myw in my package as buying at the gate then?

Yes, unless you buy your package prior to a price increase but travel after the increase. When you pay for your package, you pay for the tickets based on the price at that time, not the price it might be when you arrive. Ticket prices usually increase the first Sunday in August.

If there is any sort of discount in the package it carries through to any upgrades prioer to arrival. There should be no difference in amunt between gate and advance purchase.

Okay, thanks a bunch again you two. Last question, which may bring me back to the OP. If I upgrade my 1 day package tickets to a 7 day, I can subtract 84.14 from the 7 day price at the gate or before I go. I get that.

Why can't I use the GAD voucher to offset the cost of going from a 1 day to a 7day? Is that what you said in your original response is combining two tickets, which they don't let one do?

Sorry to keep asking, just don't understand why I can't do that.

Thanks for setting me straight. I can't wait to go with my family!

Think of the GAD voucher as a one-day ticket that can be upgraded (which it is) instead of a gift card worth 84.14 (which it isn't). You can upgrade a one-day ticket to whatever ticket you need - you get credit for the 84.14 already paid (or earned, in the case of the GAD). You can't take two one-day tickets and combine them to make a multi-day ticket (whether they are both MYW tickets or one is a GAD ticket and one is your package ticket).

You can either upgrade the package ticket to a 7-day or upgrade the GAD ticket to a 7-day. Total cost at the time of upgrade is the same either way (since you have alreaady paid for or earned whichever one-day ticket you choose to upgrade). You just can't combine two physically separate tickets to make one ticket.

Hope that makes sense! Have a great trip! :goodvibes

It does make sense b/c you've been so helpful! I get it now. Thanks!

Just a heads up for anyone. When I called to upgrade my tickets I couldn't figure out why they were charging me $30 more until they told me it would because I was changing so close to going to my vacation date.

However, since they didn't tell me this at the beginning they waived the fee.

So I guess the moral is if you are going to upgrade tickets in a package and you are close to leaving, just do it at the gate.

Disney sometimes charges a $50 change fee if you modify a package when you are within 45 days of check-in. They typically waive the fee if you are increasing the cost of your package, though. They don't want any deterrents to spending more money. ;)

But you're right - sometimes it is much easier to upgrade individual tickets at the gate rather than explain to a CM on the phone what you want to accomplish.

Hope your trip was magical! :goodvibes
