My father is going with us to Disney for the first time in over 20 years. We are so excited to be taking him back to the World. He broke his hip several years ago and has problems standing or sitting for long periods of time. He doesn't want to rent an ECV, but I am wondering if a GAC will be necessary. I thought I'd ask here for some information/advice.

Thanks,
Melanie

It doesn't sound like a GAC is neccessary. If I understand you correctly, he's unable to sit or stand for long periods of time. The GAC isn't going to prevent either, unless you plan on traveling during a peak period (Thanksgiving, Christmas, President's Weekend, Easter), and expect to be in long queues.

I've been over to the parks fairly regularly since we moved to central Florida this past summer. We've gotten the GAC for each visit, but honestly haven't had much need for it since mid August. The most it has been used is three times in a full Saturday in the MK.

That being said, I've been at WDW with a good friend who is in need of a hip replacement (her doctor is holding off) and we manage with her taking quite a few rest breaks. She'd be fine, even w/o my son's GAC. My SIL, however, another hip replacement candidate, will only travel the parks with an ECV. The big difference is that friend has no other health issues and SIL is also a heart patient.

Basically, if the hip is his only issue, plan your travels in the parks with lots of breaks. If he's got other contributing health issues, then get the ECV.

Thanks! I couldn't really think of anytime we would need it. We are going at a rather busy time, Dec 16-27. I have tried to convince him to rent an ECV. He is extremely stubborn and won't even consider it. He may change his mind after the first evening.
