GAC in DL?

I have used one frequently in WDW for DS (ASD). Is there something different/new I need to know about obtaining one in DL? Also does Universal have something similar--specifically Universal Hollywood?

What is written about GACs (Guest Assistance Cards) in the disABILITIES FAQs thread was about WDW, but it works the same in DL. One of the differences is that since DL is an older and smaller park, they have less places for people to wait. You would still go to Guest Services in DL and request a GAC. Then, ask the CM greeter at each attraction what to do.

Universal in Florida works pretty much the same as WDW, but Universal is a newer park and actually has some waiting rooms specifically for people with special needs. No one has ever written about Universal Hollywood, so I can't help you with that.

Last September we went to Universal Hollywood for a day. We was instructed as we entered the park (MY husband brings his own power wheelchair) to stop at Guest Services. They were so nice too. They gave us a pass that allowed us alternative entrances in specific rides that could not go through with a wheel chair. Things like the mummy we entered different, and Shrek 4D, the tram ride, and I think a couple others.

You do need it even if you have a wheel chair there but at Disneyland you do not if you have a wheel chair you automatically go in the handicap access when provided.

One thing about Hollywood Universal is its built on a huge hill. People ride many many, many ,many esclators down to get to the bottom part. But handicap have a special van to take them down. We had to wait a few minutes for him to return to the top but it was like getting a small back stage tour in the van. LOL. Im sure it took us longer to get to the bottom waiting for the van so it balances out how you get in some things faster, some things are slower.

Let me try to write how we entered rides at Universal in another post. Its been about 6 months so I need to remember a lot.


Im not knowledgeable about ASD but if there is any question about hidden handicap for sure get the Guest assistance card at DL. Mobility issues are the only reason you would not need it since then they tell you to get a wheel chair.

How we entered rides in Universal Hollywood:

We first went to the tram ride,. Its in a lower lot and we had to take an elevator to get there. They then had us go to an area seperate from the crowds to load. We had a wheel chair ramp if you could not transfer or you could just get in the tram up the few stairs. We all were seated in the first car near the narator.

Next we saw Shrek 4D. The problem here is they make Handicap sit in the front row. Its a 3D type show. My husband did transfer to a regular seat but he could have stayed in his wheel chair if he wanted.

We then decided to go to the bottom other side to do the attractions there. I wrote about the van in my previous post. We basically took an elevator down about one story level and waited for a van to pull up. He was able to roll right into the van since its at a dock that is van level.

We got off right by the Mummy so we ride it. They sent us around the side to enter where as others entered in front. We got to the front and they put us on pretty much right away. (You must transfer for this ride too)

Then we went to Jurrassic Park. I hate to get wet and did this under protest lol. We was in the normal line until near the very end when there was a turn style then I just opened the chain for him to go through. Thats right near the load part.

We then went into the Back Draft show. They had us enter last on this one and we was in the front row the entire time. After that we did Special effect stages and there again we was las in the front row.

After that we went back up on the van to the top.

We saw Terminator 3D and was pulled aside to the right to sit in special chairs. You can stay in your chair or transfer. If you stay in your chair it does have some movement as your on a pad there.

Water world was not running when we was there and we didnt do the House of horrors or Simpson ride.

DLR is like WDW but I recommend getting the GAC because you enter and pass right by there. That way if you run into a CM who is new, does not understand the rule or whatever then you will not have to go get one. You do not need one if you are in a wheelchair.

Study online info about the parks and pick up disabled materials at guest relations. DL was built before ADA for the most part. Some rides you wait in line and others use a seperate entrance or the exit. DCA usually requires the guest to stay in line to a certain point. All rides are assessible with transfer but some like the astro orbiter are impossible to get out of, lol. Most rides at DLR are like WDW rides.

A lot of times Fast Pass and single rider can be faster.

At DLR, they give you a great "guide" along with the GAC. This guide will give you info on the proper enterances to use for each attraction. It was helpful, and I wish they had one for WDW.

There is a link to the DisneyLAND Guidebook for Guests with Disabilities in post 14 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of this board (the thread is marked with a green arrow).

WDW does have a guidebook like that for each park. You can request them from Guest Relations in any of the parks or there is a link in post #3 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread to the text from the WDW website.

DLR is a lot stricter about giving out GACs, but bring your old one from WDW, it may help.
