If you'll be flying after January 22, 2018 you might want to review ID requirements for your state.

The following information (in blue box) is copied from this link

The REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards. The purposes covered by the Act are: accessing Federal facilities, entering nuclear power plants, and, boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft.

Current Status of States / Territories
Please select a state/territory for current status.

NOTE: DHS is currently reviewing extension requests from states with extensions that expired on October 10, 2017. DHS will update this page as these reviews are completed and new extensions are granted. In the meantime there will be no change in enforcement status for these states. States will have a grace period until January 22, 2018, meaning that Federal agencies (including TSA) will continue to accept driver’s license and identification cards issued by these states in accordance with each agency’s policies.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on December 20, 2013 a phased enforcement plan for the REAL ID Act (the Act), as passed by Congress, that will implement the Act in a measured, fair, and responsible way.

Secure driver's licenses and identification documents are a vital component of our national security framework. The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards. The purposes covered by the Act are: accessing Federal facilities, entering nuclear power plants, and, no sooner than 2016, boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft.

DHS is committed to enforcing the REAL ID Act in accordance with the phased enforcement schedule and regulatory timeframes and is not inclined to grant additional extensions to any states that are not both committed to achieving full compliance and making substantial and documented progress in satisfying any unmet requirements. It has been 12 years since the REAL ID Act was passed and half of all the states have already met the REAL ID minimum standards. It is time that the remaining jurisdictions turn their commitments to secure identification into action.

Since Oregon has been granted another extension for compliance, I applied for a Border Crossing Card.
I already have my Passport but felt a Border Crossing card was easier for trips to DLR.

Yes....
I figured it would be a good idea to have the border card just in case....

Yep, just cause it isn't "needed" doesn't mean there won't be delays and awkward situations etc. have already been part of way too many of those with the all of the massive inconsistencies across TSA and their counterparts across the globe. But for boarding planes, the date is October 1, 2020, so you still have a while there. I just plan on using my Passport until I get around to gettingva new license.

Luckily we are traveling in Dec but what will happen to the extension states after that date? We can’t use our drivers license as I’d for a plane? My passport is expired since we haven’t been traveling out of country but do they expect the extension states will be able to continue to use drivers license or we will need a passport soon?

Depends on state. Go to this site, select your state on the drop down and it will give you the detail:

Given that we can currently sill board domestic flights without any ID at all this isn’t something I worry about.

IMO? Yet another extension.

States’ rights are fun and a long-standing tradition, after all...
