FYI re: Overcast Days

Just a little tip so as not to ruin any part of your trip!

I grew up in So Calif and visited the parks often but I will NEVER forget this trip. It was June and we were all dressed for the typical HOT day. I wore shorts and had put baby oil on instead of lotion. The day was so very nice and the sun wasn't beating down on us...it was overcast! We had a ton of family with us and for some reason we had to wait on someone for something so I parked myself on a Main Street bench, (actually layed down) for a short time, to wait. A few hours later the tops of my legs were on FIRE and I couldn't figure out why?!?!?! I was SO uncomfortable and could barely walk. After putting 2 and 2 together I realized I was sunburned (ok, fried) and the Disney freak that I am I did NOT want to leave...so I visited the first aide station in search of some Aloe or pain relief spray...but to no avail. They didn't have anything execpt some cold packs that only worked for the moment. Thus I had to leave the park that day

PLEASE use sunscreen no matter what!!!! And of course DON'T use baby oil for any reason...hehehehe...that was totally my fault!!

Good advice! You can actually burn easier on cloudy days because you don't feel the heat of the sun that would normally tell you to seek sunblock or shade. We are certainly in our May Grey and June Gloom!

One more tip to add... don't forget lip balm with a SPF.

My lips got sunburned on the first day. We were only in the park for a few hours.

This is a very good tip. And, if you are a super-whitey like myself you might even need to spray SPF in the part of your hair to avoid scalp burn. I got a terrible case of it last year at a Giants game.

Yep. I grew up in the Bay Area, and my very very WORST burns ever were on overcast days. It even happens sometimes now, in the Seattle area.

My kids are brown, and here in Washington, I never worry about them burning. Well, our trip in June 2005 showed me I should worry about that! My dd was sunburned, and even my ds a little. When we got back from our week-long trip, they were a lot browner than when we left!

Sunscreen is for everyone! Not just the neon-white people!

This is one thing that always amazed me. I found that people who live on the east coast don't realize how potent the sun can be in the west- even with it being overcast. I have had many friends that were lobsters because they refused to put on sunscreen. They had never used it before, why start now.

My family has a history of skin cancer, so I am a little over paranoid when it comes to this! I have my face stick ready anytime my boys go outside.

Ok, now I'm figuring that I better really load up on the sunscreen for my upcoming trip! I'm be in CA late May/early June and I am really, really pale! I guess I'll have to do the "sunscreen on the part of my hair" thing, although I detest how it makes my hair look all oily!

I do sometimes -- I find that tight hats give me headaches, though, and loose ones tend to blow off. Maybe I need to find some sort of hatpin to keep the hat on.

A little trick that doesn't make your hair look oily...get the kids sunblock stick (for faces) and use it on your part...it's easy...compact...and I don't get that oily look

Overcast days are even worse than sunny days - you burn faster! On a clear day the sun's rays hit the ground and bounce back out to space but when it's overcast the rays bounce back and forth between the ground and the cloud cover so there are more to burn ya!! Sunscreen is always a must during June Gloom!!
