We stayed at Fort Wilderness in a couple of cabins with 10 people - ages 5 to over 70. We visited all four parks and no one had a golf cart. We just used the internal buses so I would say they weren't a problem. Yes, you need to do the bus to the marina but just plan it and it's fine. No one used anything but Disney transportation the entire time we were there and everyone was happy. At the end of the trip, my then soon-to-be-daughter-in-law was amazed at how I said people didn't like the transportation. It was her first trip and she said "it's free and it's easy!". That was the day before she did a complete four park tour on the buses from the Cabins.
