We booked the last week of June at FW a couple of months ago and last week my husband's bad hip went from bad to terrible and he's having hip replacement on June 12th. The doctor says he can still go, but I know he's going to have some restrictions and probably won't want...or be able to do much walking.

We have a trailer and are on a full hook-up site so I'm not concerned about setting up, but am wondering if we should try to ask for a specific loop and site to be close to the Meadow Trading Post and pools or just bite the bullet and try to get a golf cart. We'll have our 5 and 2 year old grandkids with us so I know we'll be at the pool a lot.
Thoughts?

For a full hook-up site 1600 would be the closest to the pool and Meadow Trading Post. We had site 1643 back in Feb - March which is at the end/beginning of the loop, not to far from the CS. For an easy walk or ride in wheel chair or ecv, sites 1632, and 1634 are right next to the shared comfort station with 1500 loop and a easy walk to the pool and Meadows. Also, 1631 and 1633 are on the inside of the loop across from the same CS.

2 weeks after hip replacement is rough. My FIL had this done and was living with us at the time. It took him until about 4 weeks to get to any kind of normalcy

I would get him anyway to get around easily. The good part is by that time they will want him to walk some. The hardest time my FIL had was with the shower and he needed a chair to sit down and the lifted toilet.

I had total hip replacement in December and had an easy recovery. That being said, I would not have been wanting to go camping in our trailer. I would have been game for a hotel with handicap accomodations or waiting about 5 weeks before camping. There might be disappointment in how much activity can be done with the little ones so early in his recovery. If you decide to go anyways, a golf cart will be a great help and as noted above the shower chair and the lifted toilet. The comfort stations at the Fort are wonderfully equipped for handicapped and taking a shower there might be preferable to the trailer. Check the width of the areas in your trailer so his walker can get around as needed. Check with your doctor about swimming ... might need to hold off for a few more weeks. All in all, whenever you go, make sure you get a chance to sit a spell in the rockers at Trails End while the grandbabies run around on the lawn.

Yikes! 2 weeks after surgery???

My mom was still in rehab then with lots of pain meds. She then had 3 weeks of daily pt.

I couldn't imagine going to the fort and then with 2 very young grandchildren who need a lot of attention.

Good luck to your Dh. I hope it all goes well for him.

I had a total hip replacement last July. Is his anterior or posterior? I had posterior which has more recovery time. I went to Disney 8 weeks after surgery and had to navigate parks with a wheel chair, as that is just too much walking. The bigger question is in regard to camping itself. Does he usually empty the tanks and do set up? Bending down to do these things is verboten. 2 weeks is NOTHING in the healing process. I am just now feeling like I can do most all of my old activities. At the 6 month point, I could still feel where the top of the femur had been cut off when I turned just right! Only now has that gone away. You should really think about this, as I have read of tons of people that have had to get revisions from doing too much too soon.

Yeah....we realized that it would be too much for him so I cancelled the trip tonight. We're disappointed, but at least we have 3 more trips planned before the end of the year.

I know you're disappointed, but honestly, I'm relieved to hear it. Considering that I wasn't even allowed to drive for 4 weeks afterward, I was concerned about you just getting there! You'll have plenty of time for future trips. We will be at the Fort in December and I'm looking forward to it, as it will be my first camping trip since my hip replacement.
