FW Cabins - are they for us??

Hi!!!

We are a family of 4 - we have two young boys (they'll be 3 and 6 when we visit WDW)

We are looking for somewhere to stay for 5 nights over the Christmas holiday (probably 29th Dec - 2nd Jan ) after a Disney Cruise, and loved the idea of space after being in a cramped stateroom.

Am I right in saying we can park our car right next to the cabin?? (The boys get really tired after a day in the park - and this sounds great rather than having to trek through a hotel complex!! )

Do you think FW is a good place to stay with two young boys?? (I really like the idea of the boat to MK and the campfire - are these much of a 'trek' to get to??) Is the campfire suitable for little ones??

FW is a WONDERFUL place to stay with your children. In my opinion, it is the most family oriented resort on Disney property. They would love going to the campfire,,,there is a sing-a-long at the beginning, they can make smores, and even watch a free movies that they show at the campfire.
And at 9:45 PM every night there is a electric light, boat parade, with music, that can be seen anywhere along the lake shore. And anytime they shoot fireworks at the MK you can watch them from the lake shore,,beautiful !

And yes,,the boys will really enjoy the boat rides.

And yes, you can park you car right at the cabin.

I would also like to add that Christmas Holidayz is the very best time of year to visit the Fort,,EVERYONE at the Fort decorates their campsites up with lights etc. (it's an attraction in itself)

The cabins have everything you need, including the kitchen sink,(actually a whole kitchen), but you have to provide your own food. Daily mousekeeping service make for a nice clean cabin.
the boys will love the beds,, theres a set of bunks and even one of them new fangled beds that fold down out of the wall thats fun !

When you aren't in the parks theres more than enough for the whole family to enjoy at the Fort each day.

thanks Frank!! I'm definitely sold on the idea - I just have to persuade DH that this is better than the ASM Family suites!! - he likes the idea of a separate bedroom for the children, but I will read him your post and I reckon I can talk him round!!

HI We went when my son was 3 and 4 years old. We loved it. Especially traveling with young ones. The cabins are very quiet and you can get those little guys to sleep for an afternoon nap or just rest period really easy. Plus when your kids wake early, they can make as much noise as they want without bugging the neighbors.

We spent maybe 4-6 hours a day at the parks and the rest was at FW. Watch out...your DS's will like the golf cart and boat ride as much as they like MK . We also were able to swim. THe pools are heated but it was a cold trip back to the cabin. There is so much to do with the little ones!!!!!

Parking the car next to the cabin is so nice. OUr DS did actually fall a sleep back from the parks.

Enjoy, I think this is a good choice.

Actually, there is a separate bedroom That room contains a double bed and a set of bunk beds. Your boys could sleep there. The Murphy bed that pulls out of the wall is in the living room area. It is a double bed with a regular mattress & everything. It is much more comfortable than a hide-a-bed. You and DH could sleep there. Our girl/boy twins loved it when we went last year (they were 4), and we are thrilled to be going back (they will be 5 this trip). We did naps every day last year, and the separate bedroom was great. We also had kids who fell asleep in the car on the way back. Actually, 1 big reason we are renting a golf cart this year is because DD conked out on the boat from MK on the way back from Spectromagic, and DH had to carry her on a SRO bus back to the cabin. Sleeping kids weigh a TON, and DH was not happy Plus, we want to toodle around a bit.

The cabins would be a perfect fit for your group! Lots of space, nice "private" sleeping areas and the boat to the MK just can't be beat. It's more than that though, depending on where you want to eat b/c of the boats you have so many options,easily, to eat at any of the MK resorts.

And, after being in a stateroom, being able to just get up and have breakfast "at home" or coffee on your deck, before hitting the parks, will be wonderful!

The murphy bed, according to my DH, is surprisingly comfortable! Even if you don't drive, the bus stops are not far from the cabins, just request one at the front or end of a loop.

The Fort will be magical at Christmas!

I'm not certain of this, but do the ASM suites have a door between the rooms? Also, I don't think they have a full kitchen, but more of a kitchenette.

In the cabin, you could always put the kids down for bed in the bedroom earlier in the evening, then you and your husband can hang out in the living room. You can even pull out the Murphy to sleep so you aren't in the same room as the kids.

thank you everyone!!! I am going to get my DH to read this whole thread - I think I have persuaded him and especially with the murphy bed solution - sounds terrific!!

We will be there for 5 nights over New Years - we plan to drive and park at all the parks each day (we've always preferred this to the buses anyway!) - but we will get the boat over to MK one day and plan on going to the campfire at least once, as well as watch the fireworks/electric pagent from beach a couple of nights.

If you can afford the golf cart then get it. It is really fun for the kids and the adults. It will be easier to get to the beach to watch the fireworks. But if you can't....then you will still have an enjoyable time.

We have found that the cabins are great for a family of 6 and are looking forward to going again in a couple of weeks! Bring coffee and some filters, and a few sundries for breakfast. You can find more info here on the boards on local grocery stores if you aren't doing the dining plan. Also, if you are driving, see if you can get a Diamond Parking Pass from your local AAA club office. Take the boat to MK but you get preferred parking at the other parks with the pass.

I second the golf cart. Carrying two sleeping kids from the beach to the bus @ settlement depot and from the bus stop to your cabin (depending on where it is in relation to the bus stop at your loop) can be a marathon event. Good luck!

I bet the kids would like a 5th wheel better than the cabins.I bet you'd like the savings and convenience more, as well....look into renting an RV from www.CampAtTheFort.com ,
it saves alot of money when compared to a cabin, and offers more privacy from the kids!!

We LOVED the cabin!! Our three kids stayed in the bedroom and DH and I slept on the Murphy bed. He's 6'3" and it was still comfortable to sleep on. The kitchen is great, but VERY limited on pots/pans, etc. Mousekeeping every day was great. We did not rent a golf cart (although my 10-year-old begged for one all week) but our kids are older (16, 14, and 10) and we found the internal bus system very convenient. In fact, when returning from the parks via bus, we didn't even take the internal bus, we all enjoyed the walk through the peace and quiet after all the hustle and bustle of the parks. Great bonding time for our family! (We were in cabin 2661, so really close to the "front").

We like the 2600 loop. This is the loop right across from the small pool and laundry area. Very convenient

2600 is convenient.

The GC is an extra not have to have, if it's in your budget, I'd go for it.

Alot of people have had good savings with outside vendors.

Agreed--we stayed in the 2600 loop, didn't rent a cart, and were completely satisfied with the internal bus system. It would have been fun to tool around in, but we decided to spend our limited Disney funds elsewhere (another round or two of drinks at Epcot).
