Future Resorts

Does anyone think Disney will build more resorts in the future or has it reached a saturation point.I would guess they will eventually finish PC,but will that be it?I love all of the resorts,but sometimes I think,that for each resort built,several attractions could have been added to the parks.Does anyone have any opinions?

I think they will wait a few years but as long as there are people to stay in them, they will build them.

I would think they need to finish Saratoga and the Legendary Years for Pop first. Would be nice if Disney got a little Vegas on us and did like an Italian or Greek-style resort. Preferable as a moderate, not a deluxe.

I would say this....Disney needs to get the lead out and complete the ones they have started if they are telling potential guests they have reached occupancy limits.

Speaking of adding attractions as they add resort rooms,

does anyone know the ratio of rooms to capacity at parks? In other words, if every room is filled or whatever they consider "fully booked?," how does that compare with letting everyone into a park? If all rooms are filled and it is, say, 20,000 rooms X 4 people average per room?= 80,000, is there room for every person at a park?

WDW stopped working on PC after the travel industry troubles from 9-11. That is when the Disney faithful really saw the big discounts on resort rooms. We haven't been seeing nearly as many discounts lately, with the big push for 50th celebration and the new attractions. With attendance up it is entirely possible for new resorts to be built.

I think they need to stop with the values. Isn't there like 6,000 rooms at AS and 2,000 at PC. I think that it would be great to have some more mods, smaller ones like POFQ. I would love to see a mod resort with more suite type accomodations for larger families. But what I see happening is instead of them building more stand alone resorts, the new ones will be DVC.

I agree. Finish PC and no more values. Build a few more mods or even something between a mod and deluxe just for families of 5 and 6.

Something to be considered, Disney can only have as many rooms as the amount of people they can let into the parks. If Disney World were to build a few more resorts, they would need to add another park as well as continue to build onto AK. If Disney parks reach their capacity causing them to turn people away, then of course they need to be certain they can accommodate the people staying onsite as well as those visiting that will not be staying on Disney property.

Interestingly, they have addressed your question in the past few Annual Reports, but indirectly. However, a pretty savvy travel industry reportey in the Wall Street Journal (might have been the New York Times) addressed it directly a couple of months back. Apparently, the higher number of rooms in the Value category are not so much adding to bodies at the parks but rather cutting deeply into the market share at the mom & pop and low end chain motels outside of Disney property, like the Best Western Maingate and such. True, it does add more bodies to the parks, but not as much as you'd think; the building of PC in particular has simply been stealing Disney guests from the off-site world, offering a slightly higher priced, but still affordable room, with a LOT more convenience. Cutting themselves a bigger slice of the pie, as it were; it just happens to be a lower margin, but still profitable slice of the pie, that they had previously left to competitors. A good strategy, IMO.

And if they get more bodies in the parks, heck, they can always build another park (Yay!). Animal Kingdom is getting close to the decade mark, so maybe a new one by 2010? But anyway, they're still adding attractions to the existing parks, what with Soarin' at Epcot, Expedition Everest at AK; these are both added attractions, not simply replacements (like the Stitch thingy). I'm sure if the parks start getting too crowded, the imagineers will think of something else for us to spend our money on.

Another thought is that there is a whole class of folks who like staying at WDW resorts without spending a whole lot of time in the parks. Sure they go to the parks some, but they occupy WDW rooms and do other things in the Orlando area. Mainly I am thinking of DVC owners, prior to the DVC discount on APs. Even with that discount, I know quite a few of my fellow DVCers who will stay at WDW, and play golf when they are there, or just hang around their beautiful resort (I would think esp. SSR & OKW). I know the main regret we had the last time we stayed at AKL was not spending a coupleof days just enjoying the resort. I don't think this is a huge population, especially since the DVC discount on APs has convinced a bunch of them to buy APs and spend more time (and $$) in the parks, but these ppl are out there, and occupying rooms at WDW.
