My son is with friends right now at Hilton Head. They are in a two bedroom unit in building 15. When they arrived Friday night, there was a really bad smell in some parts of the unit. It was late, so they called Sat. morning. A housekeeper came up to check, said it was probably the marsh (?), so she sprayed some air freshner. By the end of the day, it was back, and this morning she came again, without being called, to spray again. He said it was mostly by the entry and in the living room the first night, but now you smell it all over the unit. The housekeeper said no one else was having the problem, so I would think it's NOT the marsh. I told him to definitely report it when they leave on Tuesday, as it might be a dead animal of some sort between walls or in a vent or something. They are on the second floor of a three floor building. What do you guys think? Otherwise, he said it has been wonderful there - perfect weather, and the ocean is still fairly warm and hardly any traffic on the island - unlike the summer.

well the marsh can be quite smelly BUT if it is the marsh it certainly isnt going to smell only by the entry and living room. You would almost certainly smell it outside the room as well and probably everywhere else on property

plus, from my experience anyway, the marsh smell has varying levels of strength depeding on other factors, such as tide. If the smell in the unit is always the same level its probably not the marsh

is it one of the units closest to the boardwalk along the marsh on the bottom floor? Im jist curious why the woman came back without asking, I hope the unit didnt get any water in it or anything

No, it's not the bottom unit. He couldn't figure out why she came back either, without being asked. I guess she must have thought it was pretty bad! LOL! I haven't talked to him today yet, so I don't know if it is still present.

Has anyone checked the neighboring units for a body?

I'm guessing it's somebody's crab bait. Maybe they have neighbors that are crabbing off the dock.
