I feel sorry for the kids that missed out on mercurochrome. That alone would make one tougher. I just read that it was used because it acted as an antibiotic and didn't sting. The hell it didn't sting. They also discovered that it wasn't all that good a killing germs either. It was good at staining anything it touched. Skin or cloth.

I missed out on mercurochrome. And my mom was an RN! "Soap and water is all you need" she would say.

Oh yeah, my Grandfather would use the mercurochrome or "methialade" as I think it was sometimes called. And, oh yeah, it stung! Now, there is one old-timey remedy that I still swear by - a product called Balsam of Myrhh. It is actually a horse linament, but it's good on cuts and burns, etc. That stuff works! It does smell pretty strongly though.
