As a kid, I was always curious about that expression. Back in my day, you know, just after the era of the pirate, we thought it was referring to a brass stature of a monkey and how cold it would have to be to have that happen on a solid metal object. Even when we were being nasty there was a overriding aura of naive in our thoughts. Different time, different place!
