ALWAYS use the Oxford comma - people at Oxford do!

The double space is not necessary with computers as modern word processing programs use automatic kerning. They actually make a slightly larger space after a period, but not as large as two. If you double-space it will create "rivers" in the text. If you were using a manual typewriter (or possibly very old wrod processing software - think blue screen & white text), you would still need to do it.
I've been using the comma for 30+ years but didn't know that's what it was called

That’s a function of typewriters, when each of the characters took up the same amount of space on a page. The double-space made it easier to find the beginning of sentences. It’s how I learned in school (we had typing in seventh and eighth grades), but modern proper form calls for single spaces after sentences.
That's so the snowflakes don't have to injure their thumbs making that extra contact with the space bar! We also used to have to indent the beginning of each paragraph

Don’t forget having to manually return the carriage to advance the paper at the end of every line of type. (I learned to type on my grandparent’s old manual typewriter. Talk about building up the muscles in your hands . . .)

You should in fact still indent at the beginning paragraphs. The rest is just automatic kerning.

I set up the formatting in Word and it indents automatically. I don’t know if all programs do that though.

Sidetracking, I know, but I would make these two sentences. I understand about the independent clause thing, but why not use a period?

I've found that when people use a semicolon, the two independent clauses are generally connected in some kind of way; sometimes people also just like showing off and being pedantic about punctuation.

I know it's a tough habit, but documents will look better using a single space.

While maybe technically correct, also I completely disagree that it "looks better".

Sure, but when was the last time you actually saw that happening? However, isn't kerning the space between the letters in any word and only vaguely applied to indentation which is the spacing at the beginning of a paragraph? Yes, I know it's all a very minor problem that is now replaced by double spacing between paragraphs, which is just easier and does the same job. Two spaces after a sentence is just a way that made it easier to read and separate each sentence.

It looks better becasue Word will add extra space after a period. It's not enough to be two spaces, but i smore htan one. This is called automatic kerning. If you add two spaces, the space will be way too large.
