A "whole" turkey and a turkey breast?

Since I wasn't back here from the lake yet on Thanksgiving, I decided that in late January or early February I'm going to make a full Thanksgiving dinner - with all of the trimmings - for the 4 of us here at my DD's..

So last night my Dson-in-law decides to run out to the supermarket around 10 p.m. because he was out of his sharp cheese, Ritz crackers, pepperoni, and salsa that he likes to snack on while he's watching tv.. He asked me if I needed anything and it dawned on me that with Christmas only being a few days away, they probably had turkeys on sale.. So - I asked him to pick up the smallest whole turkey he could find.. Not a "turkey breast" - the whole turkey so I could stuff it and we would have the drumsticks.. He mentioned that he had never purchased a turkey before and didn't know what to look for, so I grabbed a cookbook and showed him what NOT to buy: not a roasting chicken; not Cornish hens; and not a turkey breast.. Showed him a photo of a "whole" turkey - told him where they were located in the store - and indicated that he would know he had the "right" thing if he could feel the two legs tied together.. "Great! Got it!!".. (Just as he was going out the garage door I said it one more time - a WHOLE turkey - NOT a turkey breast..)

By the time he came home, I was already in bed, so I didn't bother to check..

Get up this morning - he's standing by his big coffeemaker - I'm standing by my one-cup coffeemaker - and I asked him if he got the turkey.. "Yup - it's in the freezer.." I said, "In the chest freezer in the garage?" - and he said, "No, the freezer in the fridge.." (Uh oh! Last time I looked in there it was pretty darn full..) So I open the freezer door and what to my wondering eyes should appear? Something waaaay too small to be a "whole turkey".. I pull it out and sure enough, it's a turkey breast.. Worse yet, I look at the price tag and he (I) paid $15 bucks for this turkey breast!!!!

I handed it to him and said, "Read the label.." :rolleyes1 "Ummm..it says turkey breast.. BUT it comes with a GRAVY packet!!!" (Grin, grin..)

I just stared him down and said, "You had best vacate this kitchen right now or I'm going to HURT you with this!!!" LOL..:rotfl::rotfl:

So - either it goes back to the store - or I swap it with his mom for a WHOLE turkey because she prefers the breast.. Or better yet, maybe I'll put it in his Christmas stocking!!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Gotta love him.. He tries..:lovestruc

DF's parents raised turkeys this year and kept trying to give me one :scared1: I can cook, and enjoy turkey, but their "little Ones" were over 20 pounds. Of course, DF, who does the laundry in exchange for my cooking( he can make mac and cheese:lmao:) thought it was a great idea. So far I have managed to not take one home, so C.Ann where should I send you this turkey I know I will end up with

Well.... I should probably just keep quiet, but what the heck?

A few months back, I was really in the mood for turkey and pulled a turkey out of the freezer that my husband had bought at a prior time. Like you, I too was fully expecting to stuff it. After it was thawed, I made the stuffing made up, then opened the turkey and to my surprise, it was only the breast. I guess hubby didn't know they packed only turkey breasts? The bad thing is, I never knew it either, so we both learned something new that day. :lmao:

So yes, in all honesty, hubby does know NOW that they only sell turkey breasts.

Alrighty then.. NO men allowed to shop for turkeys.. LOL..

I mean I "could" cook the turkey breast and do the stuffing on the side, but the stuffing that I make tastes soooooo much better when it's cooked inside the bird and gets the full flavor.. Drats!!

I really don't care a whole lot for the turkey myself. I make it (especially if it's not being made for a holiday), just so I can have the stuffing. It's to die for cooked inside a turkey, IMO.

Add hams to that list, LOL.

A few years ago we realized that we were going to be having more guests than expected to our Christmas dinner. The three turkeys were not going to cut it, so we decided to add a ham because ham is simple; just glaze it and get it warm. Simple.

Not when the two men you send to the supermarket on Xmas Eve decide to buy a FRESH HAM!!! They saw fresh and thought that would be good, right, fresh is better than frozen? Um, not exactly, boys, because a fresh ham is an uncured pork roast, and that is a LOT more work to cook.

Note to self: Do not ask Dson-in-law to purchase ham either..
