Do you think ministers should get 50 to 100 dollars for speaking or praying at a persons funeral? What if they have known that person for years?
The reason I asked is we recently buried my mother. She was secretary for 2 different ministers in her life time. The funeral director said we should give the ministers church she was buried at 50 dollars, all he did was basically say a prayer. The second minister got 75 dollars, he spoke a few minutes and prayed as did the 3rd minister who received 100 dollars.(He is the minister of our own local church where Mom attended and was secretary at her time of death)
I was truly surprised as ministers today make large salaries where we live, and most of the members of churches tithe. The churches also pay them mileage if they travel to a funeral.
Both ministers who knew my mother preached a sermon on cancer
(huh?
), Mom died from pneumonia! All 3 men kept the money as far as I know.
I am not mad, just dissapointed and feel that the ministers positions are becoming all about money instead of ministry. I did tell my family to cremate me and let people who they feel truly loved me speak and pray.
No ministers for pay thanks!
What are the traditions about ministers and funeral pay in your part of the country?
