I'm looking for a fun restaurant for a birthday lunch or dinner. It would have to be either in Magic Kingdom or outside of the parks. I don't want BOG or CRT again, and it doesn't have to be a character meal, just something fun.

I once heard someone describe Jungle Skipper Canteen as "fun." Can anyone tell me what's fun about it? The menu looks good.

We'll be paying out of pocket, if that makes a difference.

I don't know if I would describe Skipper Canteen as "fun". The food is good, IMHO, and there are some cute things that happen (you can hear people talking in the offices located above the main area of the restaurant, etc.), but it's not character meal or O'hana fun.

If you are willing to leave the park and you want fun, I would boat over to Whispering Canyon at WL. It's SO fun! The servers are hysterical. They do "pony" rides and make sure you ask for ketchup! The prices are quite reasonable, also, IMHO. If you've never been there, the boat ride over is so nice and the resort is gorgeous!

If you are willing to spend a little more money and time, Hoop Dee Doo Revue at Ft. W is SUPER fun and Ft. W is such a nice place to visit. All of the WDW horses are housed in the ranch there so you can visit them while at the resort. Even take a wagon ride!

O'hana is fun, too! If you go there, I would recommend a stop at Trader Sam's before or after (we like going right at 4 pm to secure a seat). They have all sorts of effects and antics at Trader Sam's and live music and games (limbo and coconut races) at O'hana.

We'll be staying at Wilderness Lodge so Whispering Canyon sounds like a good idea! Although I've never eaten at O'hana and I'm dying to try that too. Decisions, decisions...

If you're a fan of the Jungle Cruise's skippers jokes and manner PLUS finding the menu appealing then the Skipper Canteen is definitely a place to check out. I've been twice and am going to go back on my next trip. I will be going to Ohana's for my birthday this year, but I've previously gone to Prime Time Cafe (DHS) and Raglan Road (if it's the day of your birthday you get a free dessert).

Whispering Canyon is definitely a hoot and if you would prefer a quieter room they can provide that.
