I have a 4 day trip planned for November to belatedly celebrate my 40th and my son's 9th birthday. I'd like to plan someplace fun to have a custom birthday cake, but with MK no longer doing custom cakes it cuts out our usual list.

I'm considering leaving MK and doing a birthday lunch w/cake at a resort restaurant. WCC came up as an option but we've never been. I hear it can be a lot of fun and it fits one of my potential cake themes pretty well (BTMRR) but I'm wondering about how the food is and what travel time is like to and from MK.

Any other suggestions for outside of MK but not too hard to get to using Disney transport?

TIA!

1) Not all that much "fun".
2) There are two phrases that inspire actions, but little else.
3) as far as food, it is "average" . . . good but, only average
4) If you take the boat from MK, figure 45-60 minutes from the front entrance of MK (walk-to-boat time, travel time, and walk-to-eatery time).

NOTE:
I would prefer a lunch or dinner in The Wave at CR.
It is a quick walk to CR from MK, and the "podium" Mickey Cake is cute (and delightfully chocolate suicidal).
You order the cake when you check-in at the restaurant podium and it is ready by dessert.

If your son happens to be into dinosaurs, T Rex in DS was a huge hit with my 2 boys. They don't have custom cakes, but they do have an enormous dessert called the chocolate extinction.

We loved WCC. It was one of the best meals and best service we had on our honeymoon trip (and we did a Signature meal).

We enjoyed WCC cafe a lot and DD7 has it on her must-do list for next trip. I think it would be fun for a b-day lunch and a BTMRR cake would be perfect there.

I would check out the sticky on this board that’s all about cakes if you haven’t already. It’s got amazing info.

ETA: Hoop dee doo would be a lot of fun, too, but would be an early dinner rather than lunch if you went to the 4:00 show.

The food has always been good. We prefer breakfast to lunch, but lunch was still very tasty. Bottomless milkshakes for a 9 yo will be great and the antics are fun. I don't consider it a place for a celebration, but for lunch it will be a solid choice if they are offering the custom cake you want. Have you considered an in hotel room celebration with a cake from Winn Dixie or Publix--a much more cost effective and tasty option compared to the Disney cakes?

My DS9 loved WCC so much on our trip in August, we went there 3 times, LOL! (We were staying at WL) It is SO fun and the servers are great. Ask for ketchup, ask for water and stay for the horse races. I would definitely do it. We are going back in December and WCC is on the must-do list. The boat from MK is about 15 minutes. We found WCC at lunch wasn't very crowded, either. The food is good - we love the skillet!
