At the supermarket or Walmart, etc. do you organize your items on the belt or just load it randomly?

I usually use self-checkout but for larger orders I like to place similar items together, frozen, refrigerated, produce, non-foods, etc, with lightweight items like bread and potato chips last.

Oh, and heavy items first, like gallons of milk, 6 packs of soda, canisters of detergent pods, etc.

I always put my canned food together, cold food together and fragile things last. I get thanked all the time from the cashiers and baggers when I do it so I'm guessing it is unusual. Or they're just being overly friendly. :)

Depends on the store! If I have a full size belt to place my items on ( a full week's worth of groceries) and there aren't a lot of people behind me, THEN I love doing it myself. When my husband and I shop, he always scans and I bag.
If I'm getting a few items I use a self check out! .

I try to do this but sometime the food has moved on before I get to the bottom of the basket. Most of the time I bag my own. Not fussy, but I use to be a cashier. I know what it feels like not to have a bagger.

Always place the cold items first, in hopes that they will be bagged together. The soft things (bread, chips, eggs) are at the end. Everything else is a free for all

I always bag for myself so even if things get a little jumbled coming down the belt I can bag things together how I like them. But I usually put them on the belt grouping like things together (cold stuff, freezer stuff, what goes together in the same cabinet, etc). DH and I usually grocery shop together so if the cashier starts scanning before we are finished loading the belt then I just start bagging and he finishes up putting the groceries on the belt.

I can't even remember the last time I used a check out with a cashier. But I would do it the same way I do it on U Scan. I put all dairy and frozen foods first and put them in the cold bags. Then I do the canned goods and put them in a tote. Everything else I try and keep together as I bag it.

Me too.

I always organize - there are times where I start out so good/neat and in the end, just put things up on the belt/very rarely use self check-out.

When cashiers used to bag - there are few now that do or help - I would still rather pack my own groceries. I like to be organized when bagging and certain items do not belong together in a bag.

Do you have Aldi in the US? It’s a German chain, with no self service checkouts, the speediest checkout people you will ever encounter and no space near the tills for packing. You are encouraged (have no choice) but to place everything back into your trolley and then there is a shelf, some distance away, where you are supposed to bag. It gives me the same feeling as when you are trying to collect and put on your belt, wallet, watch, shoes etc., and gather all your belongings after you have been scanned at airport security.

We have Aldi where I live and I love shopping there. I get to experience some foods I'd never enjoyed as a child and young adult and their prices are pretty darn good as well. I shop there every other week.

The Aldi near me has self checkout. It's similar to Costco where you bag everything up in the trunk of your car lol

I'm a diehard self checkout fan so I was happy to see Aldi had it too.

U.K. (well the Welsh one) Costco’s don’t have self check out. They even have people who bag everything for you.

Costco is the only store I don't use self checkout for. The line is longer than regular checkout and like Aldi, those cashiers work at lightning speed. No one packs up your stuff for you. They place it back into your cart. I've seen people use leftover shelf boxes to carry their stuff home but I usually leave reusable bags in my car and pack it up myself.
