Today was a planned rain day. We knew it was going to rain and decided it might be a good time to visit Kennedy Space Center. We thought being a little further south we might avoid the rain a little, but it followed us and hit us bad. When we got there, the rain hadn't hit yet, but it was kinda windy. Thankfully, when we went to pay admission, they let Brittany in free which we were very thankful for in retrospect.
Because of the time we left and the drive, we arrived just at lunch hour. When we asked Brittany what she wanted for lunch (we looked at the map and guessed at kids lunched they might have) she said spaghetti. We went over to their buffet style restaraunt and I was shocked to find they had no meals for kids. We could go back to the fast food place and get a hot dog, or pay $6.25 for a big plate of spaghetti noodles (she doesn't like sauce). Disappointed, we bought a quite mediocre lunch for which I paid as much as a character lunch at a Disney style character restraunt. Even the workers were grumpy here in the food place.
We jumped onto the included 'tour' only to have it start to pour immediately. It was a bus tour to three separate stops, the first of which being something called Gantry 39. This turned out to be an open sided four story tower from which you can climb up and take pictures of the space shuttle on the launch pad. We only had a couple problems with this. It was raining too hard to see the pad at all even from the bus. Because it was raining too much, the bus didn't even stop - just turned around and went to the next stop.
The next stop was the Saturn V Center, which was, after two short movies, a nice big hanger for a refurbished Saturn V rocket. There was lots to see and do here, but mostly targeted at Adults and children older than my daughter - quite a bit older. We hung out a bit, took some pictures, and then headed to the last stop - the International Space Station Center. This was quite a cool place to be and we got to see actual Space Station modules being worked on. Again there was not much for Brittany here, so it was a big bust again.
After getting back from the tour, we decided to find something for Brittany to do, and headed towards the kids play dome. On the way we went through a building and accidentally found a blues clues show about the planets. We made it over to the play dome which was not under any of the walkways, and let Brittany play a while. The play dome was rather, shall we say, lacking of much interest to Brittany again.
Figuring we weren't getting much of anywhere, and just completely dissatisfied with our day, I ran to move the car up (in the rain again) and we all piled into the van and headed home. We stopped at a Walgreens to pick up some munchies for the Villa and stopped at Chili's for dinner.
All in all I wouldn't return to the space center until Brittany is a little older. There wasn't much for her to do, and most of the stuff will be over her head for quite a while. That and a lot of the place was kinda run down. The bathrooms were horrible and there were a lot of places that needed upkeep or painting. I suppose maybe I'm holding them to the Disney standards so maybe that's part of it. Certainly I will be writing them a letter, hopefully they can add some more stuff for kids to do.
