Just wondering....has anyone else been charged a "fuel surcharge" for the delivery of their ECV?

I have arranged for the rental of 2 ECV's from Walker. We are staying 4nites/5 days at the CR & are needing both a standard & heavy-duty ECV. I understood the delivery to be "free" but when I made the reservation yesterday they said there was now a $5 fuel surcharge PER rental. We obviously still need the scooters & I went ahead and made the reservation since it was only $10 more -- but since I had spoken with someone at Walkers twice before booking it really caught me off guard. I even made sure I asked for a final total when I was doing my research.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Wow that is something new. I guess it is to make up for the new lower rates that he is charging by telephone only. Hmmmm

I can understand why he might be doing this but it should be stated upfront. I wouldn't do it...

I had waivered waivered between Randy's and Walker's. Then, I heard about Best Priced mobility on the Dis. One person PM'd me and said she had ordered from them, the chair looked almost new, the customer service was good, she received a 10% discount in the future if she completed a survey AND the price was cheaper.
I called them and sure enough I am going to save about $100 for my stay.
The lady, Konni, who I guess is the owner or secretary has been very nice to me while getting it booked. Assuming you paid $200 for the 5 days, that would be an increase of 5% to your bill. I checked Walker's website again and there is no mention of a fuel surcharge, it still says FREE delivery to the hotels. I assume they are bringing chairs to and from Disney on most days. You just leave the chair at the front upon departure. If I were to leave a chair on the 25th, and someone else needed it on the 25th, I would not imagine that they are coming to and from the hotel for that chair. I think it is probably just sitting there between people unless they get a call that something needs fixed. I could be wrong. They could be bringing in 2-3 chairs at a time on the truck, and each person is paying $5 each way for the delivery and pick up. I would call them back and cancel or ask for this to be removed from your bill. They have a right to charge a fuel surcharge if they need to, but you have a right to know up front what your charges will be without a last minute increase. This is no different then going to Wal Mart, paying your bill then being asked to pay for the gas it took to bring the supplies to the store.

Hello 1sttimemickeymom. Let me begin by saying THANK YOU for renting from Walker Mobility. Let me address your concern over the $5.00 dollar fuel surcharge per order: This is nothing new we have been charging a fuel surcharge for over five calendar years now. Our scooter rentals have been the same price since 1998. Instead of raising our rates to keep with the soaring cost of fuel (we are a delivery based business) we decided on a surcharge to keep the guests costs lower. We have always given full disclosure of pricing when quoting over the phone, and when ordering on the internet your confirmation letter clearly states the amount totals. If you have questions concerning your placed orders please feel free to contact me at 1.888.SCOOTER.

Best Regards,

John R. Walker

Hello brekin67. Your thread reply needs some updating. Walker Mobility runs delivery trucks 365 days a year, and are on WDW properties from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm every day of the year to provide excellent customer service/guest support. Our scooters are never left at hotels at the end of a guest's rental. All of our scooters are brought back to base for our 29 point inspection before going back out on rental. We have always given full disclosure of our charges. Also, we are one of only three companies that has full access to WDW theme parks. We do charge a one time $5.00 dollar fuel surcharge per order, and have been doing so for over five years. The reason we implemented this was to offset our fuel costs which has affected everyone.

John

My apologies for any confusion on the surcharge. I was simply trying to answer a question and I was wrong. Walker provides top notch service and equipment and would be an excellent choice.

 I don't think you have to apologize for anything. Walker's own web-site is wrong. It does list Free Delivery:

"-FREE DELIVERY and PICKUP to all area hotels and resorts."

I'm glad 1sttimemickeymom let us know :) I'm sorry they jacked up the price on you unexpectedly. Hopefully everything will work out for a great trip!

Well I think I do owe the apology because it's unprofessional for me or any other business owner to say anything like that against our competition. I've learned from this ordeal and I will endeavor to post more responsible replies in the future. In short, I just wasn't thinking about the implications when I made that post.

My only desire is to try and help people with any questions or concerns they may have and I hope that those in need of scooters will choose to rent them regardless of who the vendor is.

I think I'll go and have a heaping helping of crow....

thank you everyone for your input, and thank you John for your reply. I'm not sure if you are the "john" I spoke with the first time on the phone or not. I do know for a fact that a fuel surcharge was never mentioned -- and was definitely not included in my price quote over the phone.

However, I certainly did not mean to imply there was anything "shady" about my rental or Walker's business practices. I will be calling you on Tuesday to discuss this issue further. (After all -- it is only $10!)

Also, Jay -- you are obviously a man of great integrity. I did not in any way take your comments as unprofessional. I thought -- and still do think -- that you were simply trying to help me understand my situation -- so thank you!

Have a great holiday weekend, everybody! :goodvibes

My thread does not need updating. Your website does. The website says Free delivery. It does not say Free delivery except for the $5 we will charge you to deliver it.

We have always used Walker's for my mom's ECVs and have always received excellent service. Whatever price we have been quoted when we called, is the same price we have always been charged. However, our email confirmation has always mentioned that the quoted price includes a one time $5.00 fuel surcharge fee. It has never bothered us and we have never even thought about it, because their price has always beat or matched everyone elses and we know their service has always been great. We already have my mom's ECV reserved for our Dec 12th-20th trip at CSR. $237.50 for a nine day rental, from a company that we know we can trust, can not be beat, $5.00 fuel surcharge or no surcharge.

I just rented from Walker and the first time I called for info I was told there was a $5 one-time service fee (she started to say fuel surcharge but changed to service fee as she spoke). I wasn't shocked by the charge because I believe that I saw it on the website listed as "one time service fee".
The email confirmation listed it as a fuel surcharge.
The rate, even for a heavy duty scooter is still less than renting inside the park at Disney and I get to have it to GET TO the park, not just once I'm inside.
I only did a 2 1/2 day rental, but may extend it for the remainder of my stay if it works out well for me.
