Fuel surcharge on the rise.

We have been fully paid with TCD for a couple of months and not been asked to pay any extra. I recieved my tickets today so I dont think they will now??

Hi all

I've booked with a firm called Chartered Travel. Have used them for the past 4 -5 years and found them very good.

The ABTA letter -

" In order to ask you to pay a surcharge, the tour operator must stae in their booking conditions that they reserve the right to surcharge if they suffer an increase in their costs. Increases might occur, for example, in respect of fuel costs, new government taxes or change in currency exchange rates.

You will not be asked to pay a surcharge which amounts to less than 2% of the cost of your holiday. This cost must be absorbed by the tour operator. Likewise if the surcharge is more than 10% of the cost of your holiday you have the right to cancel your holiday rather than pay the surcharge".

At no point in the letter does the ABTA actually say this applies to those who have paid their costs in full.

I intend on phoning them to ask for clarification.

My total amount paid for 2 adults is £1597.48. This if air tickets and car hire.

The company are now looking for an additional £30.00.

It could then possibly be that even though you have paid them in full, they have held off paying the airline/holiday company to keep the cash in their system to help their cash flow. as such, the contract price with the airline/tour operator can change as it is not fixed until the full remittance has been paid.

i.e. with airlines, once the full sum is paid to them, you have a binding contract at that price (with the exception of government imposed taxes) its the same as buying an item from a shop, the price agreed and paid is the price.

If my maths is correct £30 is less than 2% of the cost (I make it 1.88%)...
