Fuel Savings?

I see a lot of people use Kroger for fuel rewards. Kroger isn't exactly the most convenient to me (20 minutes away vs Publix, Food Lion, Aldi, Target, Sam's Club and Walmart all within 5 minutes) but I'm open to switching up my routine if I can maximize savings.

I see Publix runs a rather consistent $10 off grocery coupon with a $50 gas card promo, Exxon/Mobil has a rewards program and I'm going to take advantage of the Sam's Club membership promo so that will be an option as well.

Any advice on maximizing benefits from any of these options?

I take advantage of Smith's (Kroger's) gas rewards. When they have a 4X gas rewards I buy a $250 Disney GC. Saturday I got 22 gallons of gas @ $0.85 and saved $22. Smith's, Sam's, and Costco are all about 15 mins from my house. Since I take the bus to the university (students free), I only need to fill up the Expedition once a month.

The Kroger program results in a few cents per gallon savings depending on how much you spend at their store. I don't think the benefit is enough to warrant driving out of the way for it. It makes the most sense if you typically shop at Kroger's and then you gain the added benefit of some savings on future gasoline purchases.

The savings for me is in buying gift cards when they run 4x fuel points. Last week, for example, I got 770 fuel points (worth about $15 to me) for buying $50 in gift cards (I had some bonuses plus 4x points).

May not make sense for you, but we take 3 cars up at a time and try to pump as close to 35 gallons as we can. Here is our fleet's mpgs and "empty" capacity without actually running too low for safety-----9 gal-30mpg/ 15 gal-26mpg/ 22gal-12mpg. It may be worth changing your habits on only those occasions where you are able to earn 40/50/60 cents (or more) off each gallon. Disney gift cards have been a tool we use frequently to rack up points. We even use a 2% rebate card to buy them!

Do you fill prescriptions? Kroger gives 50 fuel points per script filled.

Gift cards at 4X bonus add up quickly. Check the online Kroger account for more points. I had coupons for 200 points with any Disney, Lowe's, Kohl's, Happy Card, Petsmart, and Texas Roadhouse. Spent between $20/25 on each card totaling $135 and ended up with over 1500 points from it. 1500 points is worth $52.50 to me as we maximize 35 gallons by filling more than 1 car at a time.

Surveys show on the receipts for 50 points.

We do 75% of our shopping at Kroger, as our town only has a Walmart, Kroger, and a nasty Sav-A-Lot as options. If Meijer has a good ad, I'll travel the 35 RT miles to shop there too.

We routinely get 2,000-3,000 points a month, that's $70-105 in fuel savings, over a grand a year.

For someone that's a casual Kroger shopper, gift cards are the way to go.

We rarely need prescriptions (thankfully) and we have so many other options closer to us. It seems keeping an eye out for gift card promos will be a good plan. Maybe if I start paying more attention, I will find the benefits but Kroger just hasn't been on my radar yet. Every little bit helps and as my SO has a 45 min commute to work and back in his SUV, our fuel costs are definitely high.

We use the Gas Buddy app to see what station has the lowest price per gallon near us. Usually it is Sam's Club.

We just fill up there and go on.

In my area Kroger & Publix are right across the street from each other. I prefer Kroger mostly because prices are better. The fuel points really add up for my husband since he commuted an hour one way 5 days a week. I take advantage of their gift card promotions, especially when you get 4x the points. Always pick up Disney gift cards & stash them & Starbucks for daughter. They also have other promos like 3x points on produce or meat department. I just got monthly summit at & I saved $109.53 on gas. Another $44 with Kroger card & $9 with scanned coupons. It really does help & add up.
