AKA "“Squeezing in one more trip before my baby has to grow up and leave the Disney nursery”

We are Fort Wilderness bound in 2 days! My husband has been lucky enough to obtain an internet card from his job so my plan is to give a “live report” from Ft. Wilderness. I say DH is lucky enough…but of course the catch is that he must take time out from the magic to check in with his work from time to time. But I get internet access so it’s worth it!

We are very busy getting the camper ready go. First thing we did was remove all of the STUFF that is important for camping where we live in upstate NY, but not so much when camping in FL in August (heavy sleeping bags, fleece blankets, parkas, and hot cocoa) (oh, and also most of the dishes because I’m on vacation too, darn it, and so PAPER products it will be!). Next we replaced all of that STUFF with MORE STUFF that WILL be important as we boil in our own sweat in FL (misting fans from Wal-Mart, plenty of rain ponchos, several vats o’ SPF 50 sun block, a blender, and various drink mixes, …I’ve been taking notes from everyone here for awhile now). We will pick up plenty of beer once we arrive and set up camp. Oh yeah and freezy pops for the kids to rot their teeth on. Hey, it’s their vacation too!

Let me give you a little background on the way this trip came about…(flashback waves……) Last winter, my DH and I were discussing the fact that I was going to WDW on a GIRLS ONLY trip for Mother’s day in May. Since I have no DDs that meant I was going on an ADULT ONLY girls only trip. DH is a wonderful man and very supportive of me, but he was still whiney about not getting to go to WDW. I know an opportunity when I see one! So I merely suggested that a trip to WDW with the boys would be so nice, maybe in August of 2009. And what an adventure it would be to haul our TT down and stay at Ft. Wilderness! Well those were the magic words…DH stayed at FW when he was a kid and has lots of fond memories, memories that he would like his own sons to have as well. So it was settled! Almost…you see, I am not a patient woman. And I couldn’t stand the thought of waiting until August 2009 to go to FW with my family! So I planted the seed…”maybe it would be better to go to FW THIS August instead.” DH says, “Why?” “Well, for one thing….our oldest DS turns 10 on Sept. 2, 2008, and after that he will be an adult in the eyes of Disney. Wouldn’t it be nice to go back one last time before he must grow up and leave the nursery?” Yeah, okay, enough sentimental garbage…I just told DH it would be cheaper to go this year instead of next year and that’s all it took. Well, that and the fact that he was still whining because I got to go to WDW in May and he didn’t.

We almost cancelled this trip when gas prices started rising ridiculously. I even went so far as to get prices to stay at POR, and (gasp) off property. Staying off property would be a bit cheaper…but we discussed it and decided that the ambience of the Fort was worth paying a little extra for. We are really looking forward to relaxing in our campsite after a busy day in the parks. Our boys LOVE camping…and what could be better than camping in DISNEY WORLD!!!!!!! So off we go! Life is short…childhood is shorter…if we don’t get to FW this year who knows if we ever will.

Enjoy them now, have a fantastical time.

What a great story...enjoy your trip! Looking forward to live updates! :thumbsup2

Oh yeah, let us know how the loop renovations are going!!

Have a wonderful trip! If you have time to check in, we'd love to hear how it is!

Naomi,

What a GREAT point! Life IS too short and childhood is WAY too short. I believe in living each day to it's fullest. We're leaving out on October 3rd from Massachusetts for the Fort. We all can't wait!!!!

You all have a wonderful and safe trip!!!!!!!

:lmao: Like that's going to keep you from planning a trip next year ;)

Who me???? (I've already wormed my way into going with DH to his company conference in Orlando this December...and convinced his company to let us stay on Disney property because it's cheaper...):rolleyes1

We leave tomorrow! The plan is to be on the road at 5am and drive from our home in Upstate NY (north of Albany) to Natural Bridge, VA. We have decided to take I-81 instead of I-95 to avoid any traffic issues around the DC area (and because the drive down 81 is really beautiful). We will stay one night in Natural Bridge where the boys can swim in the pool and burn off some energy! On Sunday we will leave bright and early and travel down just north of Jacksonville, staying 1 night in the area. Again, more swimming and burning of energy. Finally, on August 18, we will depart the campground at 8am and continue on to Fort Wilderness for 11 glorious fun filled nights!

Not joining us on this journey are our three cats…all girls because I’m already overwhelmed by testosterone. Nala is 13 years old and she is vacationing with my parents because she thinks she’s human and doesn’t like the company of other cats. Morgan and Twinkle will be cared for by my MIL who will drop by every couple of days to make sure they are still eating hog like portions of cat food and holding down the couches (we wouldn’t want those couches to up and run away!).

The camper is packed and ready to go! The boys are running in circles and screaming and driving me crazy. Every so often I hear one of them say, "Tomorrow we leave for Disney!" and they all start whooping it up. Now I have to go clean my house because to me there is nothing worse than coming home to a messy cluttered house after a long vacation.

In the words of DS5….”I’m SOOOO Excited!!!!!”

Naomi,
Just watch for I-81 construction ALL through PA, and it is one lane for a lot of it. (I work in highway construction here in central PA and have 5 jobs on I-81 currently).
I've heard there hasn't been much back-up in any of my work zones, but one is 12.4 miles ONE way, and yes, it will be south bound. So, if stopping for rests, suggest doing so in NY or just before Harrisburg, and you'll be able to stay on highway and cruise though all that road work;) in between.
Also, a bit of something in common, I too have three cats, one of which is humanprincess: , and two that hold a couch and chair down:hug: .
So, enjoy your trip! At least you know your furniture will be there when you get back!

I call this "We're going to Disney World...now go to sleep!"

Well we made it to Natual Bridge, VA. It was a long ride, mostly uneventful. Except the rear passenger side tire pretty much exploded while we were going down I-81. It was pretty darn scary! DH kept the vehical under control and got it off the road and was able to change it while huge trucks zoomed past doing about 80mph. I took the boys safely up the bank by the side of the road just in case. We will get the tire fixed tomorrow on our way through Roanoke, VA. This campground is okay...on quite a a hill! The boys have been up since 4:15am and it's REALLY almost time for bed!!!! I hope tomorrow isn't quite as eventful. Boring is kinda nice.

Here is our casualty...
