Is frozen ever after scary for little ones ? I thought it was just a boat ride but when I YouTubed it it looks like it goes down hill and goes backward ? Is this more of a thrill ride ?
It's a slow moving boat ride, at one point Marshmallow 'sends' you aware from Elsa's castle ( that's the backwards part ). The slope you go down is slight. If you road the ride when it was Maelstrom, it's the same as when the troll would send you back to the 'real' world.
The backwards part is Elsa singing Let it Go and the drop is when Marshmallow tells you to leave. The ride is not scary but Marshmallow can be a little frightening. My 4yo Frozen fan did not want to ride it again for that reason!
Scary is relative. Some kids don't like any dark rides. Others may not like Marshmallow, others may not like the drop, however minor. It is definitely not a thrill ride but it may be frightening for little ones. Most will probably be ok, but with kids you never know.
I didn’t think it was scary but it absolutely terrified my then 2 year 11 month old daughter who loves the frozen movies. She did not want to ride it the rest of our trip.
Edit: I should add that it wasn’t the drop that scared her it was the giant snowman.

Sorry, but that's misleading by not ALSO describing the actual frontwards DROP which comes AFTER the "backwards" section. Guests have been confusing these two completely different parts of the ride, even back when it was "Maelstrom."

Yes. This.
Yup.
That character is very LARGE, kind of LOUD, and very CLOSE to the guests.
Are you saying there are 2 drops or that you go backwards and then spin forward before dropping just once? I rode it more than a decade ago as Malestrom and I remember the drop, but I thought it was backwards too.

It is two separate effects. One, then the other.
The "backwards section" is a very slight downward slope that runs for about 50-100 feet.
(With the guests facing away from the direction of the motion of the boat.)
Then, the boat stops.
The front end of the boat then swings to the right, and...
(as the Snowman exhales a loud command --and a mass of "fog")
The boat goes forward and falls DOWN a steep slope to a splash-down
to what actually is the "first floor" level of the ride.
(This drop is similar to the drop in Pirates of the Caribbean
just before your ride vehicle moves into the area with the giant pirate ship firing on the town.)
Before we went to Disney with my 4 year old daughter I showed her YouTube videos of every ride she was tall enough for. She knew exactly what to expect and I think that helped tremendously with the fear of rides. She is now almost 6 and loves every ride at Disney except for Dinosaur lol.
My 7 and 5 year old at the time didn’t find it scary, but my husband was scared at the backwards drop and annoyed that I didn’t tell him it happened. 🌧
My 2 1/2 year old who loves frozen was also scared of the ride. She rode it at 18 months, was scared, talked about it for a year, and then rode it again at 2 1/2. She was scared again, and did not want to ride it a second or third time with her big brother. We met Anna and Elsa instead. Again, it wasn’t the drop or the backwards that she talked about, it was the snow monster. She rode Pirates of the Caribbean 3 times this trip without batting an eyelash. That snow monster though...

Same here!! I have a 4 year old who looooooves Frozen but is terrified of Marshmallow. I mean TERRIFIED. And it isn’t the drop that scares her, it’s the animatronic. We have tried to explain it isn’t real...he’s just being silly....next time you yell back...but she absolutely refuses to get back on the ride. Poor thing.
