This will be my first experience with Frontier, and my question is what qualifies as a free personal item? They've listed the dimensions as 14''H, 18''W, 8''D. Would a regular sized backpack be OK?

Yes. I always took my backpack aboard Frontier.

You can do a backpack, a purse, a larger tote, a small duffle bag ect. If it fits within those demensions you are ok. I also saw someone with a large duffle bag but she did't over pack it at all and since it was able to smoosh into their metal container they were ok with it. Our backpacks didn't even get a second glance and we were not asked the put them in the sizers, that being said err on the side of caution and go by the dimensions listed

We used backpacks and diaper bags but my fave is a Vera Bradley weekender as it fits a lot. All of them have fit under the seat.

Measure it.... if it fits it qualifies..

No one can tell you your "backpack" is acceptable because they haven't seen it and you haven't given enough information.

(and if it's too big and they say "no" a defense of "they told me on the DIS it was OK" won't work!)

My kids have had no issues with their Under Armour and Vera Bradley backpacks. They have never been stuffed to capacity, but they were full enough, and fit just fine. Honestly, we have had zero issues with anything luggage related and frontier. If you follow their guidelines, you should be fine.
