From wish tripper to greeter - Ali's MAW trip report 4/19 - 4/25 FINALLY FINISHED!!!

sniff, sniff...this is so sweet. I love your family, I can tell you guys are a tight unit. That's so special...I LOVE those dresses the girls wore to MK....A woman here makes custom "pillow case" dresses for little girls. I've ordered 6 over the past 2 months for my daughter and had been looking at some fabric she has that's red w/ the white polka dots thinking..."Disney", then I felt like I was being kinda corny and overboard...but now I see how adorable that is...so I'm going for it! lolol....

I also loved Alice's make-up...lolol...and the interactions and dance....awwww. I truly believe that if you try to keep a positive attitude, even when you feel like screaming....things seem to work out for ya...you guys are proof...:goodvibes

I have lurked off and on for years and usually don’t post: however, I had to tell you I was moved to happy tears at the wonderful experience your family enjoyed with Cinderella and Prince Charming. Your daughters are GORGEOUS!! I was so relieved to hear the trip was improving and I know you are imparting valuable advice to just experience the magic when it comes. Thank you for sharing with all of us!
Thank you so much! I think part of what has made this such an amazing experience is the confirmation that people are in fact kind and willing to go the extra mile to add something to a complete stranger's day. This was true from the minute I started posting here, to the Big Give, to the Cinderella experience, and right down to the considerate gate attendant we had on our flight home. We have met so many incredible people, and really, that is what is so overwhelming. What you all are seeing here is the cummulative effect of all these "small" actions and considerations.:goodvibes

That was a super change in your day from the day to night! It is SOOO cool that the girls got to dance with Cinderella AND Prince Charming. How many girls can say that?!? Not many! :goodvibes I am very glad it got better! And that is some very true advice- don't go looking for the magic, let it find you! You can't find it on your own because then it's not magic. Magic just happens and only if you believe!! (yes- I am a cornball.... I can admit it!:lmao:)
They just loved it! Though now that they have had a chance to look at their pictures, Ali wants to know why there aren't any pictures of her dancing with Prince Charming. Ummm...because you were terrified?:rotfl2: And you are not a cornball - you speak the truth!:goodvibes

I am so glad your day got better and Wow what an end. The girls look beautiful.
It was just amazing. And really, it didn't stop here. There is more!:goodvibes

Hi Kelly!

I'm so glad I got to meet you at GKTW (after noticing Ali and Maya's cute Big Give dresses)! And glad one of us has the motivation to do a trip report....

Ironically, we had a similar experience with our MAW greeter at the airport too. There were greeters there for two other families, but none for Elke. I walked up to one of the others and asked what they thought we should do. He called the office, and someone came down to meet us several minutes later (in the meantime Jake went down to baggage claim to get our bags). Apparently they had our arrival down erroneously later than it was scheduled for. Perhaps that was a common error that week?

We also then arrived at Avis to find that they had no car for us.... That was lovely. But our MAW greeter spoke with them and they miraculously came up with one.

I wish Elke has been in the pool with Ali and that little boy that day. It would have been good for her to see other children with g-tube buttons. But she's so young that it doesn't affect her all that much (I think!).

As I mentioned at GKTW, we too found the MK to be more exhausting than the other parks. But we mostly focused on Fantasyland with Elke (did Winnie the Pooh MANY MANY times, and also the carousel). She also loved the jungle cruise, and exploring Minnie's house in Toon Town. But I had read about the Stitch ride and decided that she would be terrifed (hey, she was scared in Peter Pan...).

We also had a similarly magical experience at 1900 Park Fare, where we also went for dinner. It was at the end of a long day (the day we left GKTW and switched to the Poly), and Elke was really not doing well. When a CM approached us and said that we should meet Cinderella and Prince Charming in the garden before we left for some private time, I was actually hesitant. But it worked out well, and Elke warmed up to them away from the chaotic environment inside.

Glad to see Ali and Maya had some quality time with the characters. Can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip!
It was so nice meeting you! You have a beautiful family - Elke looks just like you!:goodvibes That is too weird about the common greeter experience. I wonder if it was a busier week than usual with fewer volunteers than usual. Our greeter explained to us that she was essentially supposed to be in four different places at the same time, which we all know is virtually impossible. I'm glad that everything worked out for you and that they were able to arrange the rental on the spot - I would have been freaking out!

I wish Elke had been there, too. It was so good for Ali to see that she is not alone in this. She would even get out of the pool willingly for her Pedialyte boluses, I think because it was just not a big deal there. You could look at the other tube feeders, and say, "He's doing it, too." The dad of the little boy was great, too. He just seemed to be having the most fantastic time. It was such an awesome experience after our morning in the park.

I'm sorry Elke was scared in Peter Pan.:scared1: It was Ali's favorite ride, and actually, we stayed on it for several trips through. Stitch was a bust, though I don't think I could have convinced Ali that was going to be the case - Stitch is her "thing." Same thing with Space Mountain and Maya - she wanted to ride it and there was no telling her otherwise. Ironically, by the end of the trip, Ali ended up loving rollercoasters (Goofy's Barnstormer) and Maya wouldn't go near them.

I'm glad you guys had a similarly good experience at 1900 PF. We almost didn't even go!:scared1: I'm so glad that we did, because that was one of the highlights of our trip. In hindsight, I'm so glad that we didn't spend $31.00 for the photo that Maya was just dying to have!:rotfl2:

Oh I'm so glad your day got better. How wonderful that the girls got all that special time with Cinderella and Prince Charming. I can relate a bit to what your saying about expectations. We weren't on a wish trip but we had really built this trip up in our minds. I think I had imagined us being perfectly happy every moment without regard to our actual situation as if real life and the affects of my husbands disability or my sons Autism woulden't exist simply because we were at Disney. I was let down quickley and our first day was rather stressful but once I relaxed and realized that it diden't have to be perfect to be special we had alot of great moments. I totally agree with your comment about just letting the majic happen. I can't wait to read more about your trip.
It's hard when you come on here and read all the wonderful stories to think anything but it will be the most perfect trip. And in hindsight, it really was, but there were also some real downer moments. I think it's important to share those, too, so that when you're in the midst of one, you know that it is perfectly normal and that it won't define your entire trip. KWIM? I'm glad that you're trip turned out similarly fantastic.:goodvibes

That chef was amazing with Megan's dessert. It still gets me a bit teary eyed too and it has been months. I have the picture with Megan and her tower as my iPhone wallpaper because I love it so much.
I posted this to your TR, but it is awesome to realize all the people who are willing to go out of the way to create "magic" for your child or family. Really, such a small gesture can mean so much.:goodvibes

Thank you so much! We really are close. It's quite strange, really. We are in the midst of watching several marriages around us fail while ours is going strong at 9 years and I'm not exactly sure why. We certainly have our fair share of stresses, and more often than not, my husband and I don't even sleep in the same bed (Ali has major sleep issues), but we find a way to make it work. I think that's the most important thing we got out of this trip - it's so necessary to make time for each other and just "forget" about the bad stuff for a while.

Thanks for the compliments on the girls dresses. The girls received them as part of the Big Give (BillWendy). It is an adorable print, so I say go for it!

Thanks for popping in. I love meeting new people here!:goodvibes

We woke up Wednesday morning still on cloud nine from the night before and feeling relieved that we didn’t need to be anywhere. Still, we were all up by 7:30am and ready to go by 8:30. The night before, we had received a call from the front desk that we had something there waiting for us, and it turned out to be a gorgeous edible arrangement from dear friends of ours back home. Ali hadn't eaten much since our arrival, so it was perfect!

So, we enjoyed that before heading over to the ice cream palace for a breakfast of egg sandwiches.

After breakfast, we headed over to Keaton’s Korral to do some horseback riding with the girls.

It was amazing watching the kids on the horses. As long as the child was not too big, they did their best to get him or her on a horse. Both of our girls do like horses, so I knew they would love this. Ali used to go to hippotherapy, so she’s been on horses before.

The volunteers were so caring and attentive and really just made sure it was a fantastic experience for the girls. Both received certificates and hats for their participation!

After the horseback riding, we decided to get the pillows and star out of the way so that we did not find ourselves at the end of the week trying to squeeze it in. We wanted to take our time and really enjoy the Castle of Miracles, which we had not yet visited. We decided that I would bring the girls’ hats and certificates back to the villa and grab the envelope for the pillow and star, while the rest of the family went on to the carousel and Castle. I’m glad I did, because I got to meet Melissa! It was only briefly as they were in their car on the way out to the parks, but it was so nice to be able to put a name to a face.

Back at the Castle of Miracles, the girls were having a great time.

You’ll begin to see a trend here, and that is Ali with her hands over her ears. She has many sensory issues, including noise. And, she’s just a very fearful kid in general. The first night we were there, she decided that she was terrified of Ole Elmer, the snoring tree, because she was convinced it was growling at her. Every time we passed it, she would put her hands over her ears and start running. Imagine my surprise to discover that she loved playing inside ‘Ole Elmer, though her hands were never very far from her ears. I guess it was her way of facing her fears.

Maya enjoyed the magic mirror and playing with the wishing well that made all kinds of noises, but Ali was feeling noise shy and stayed away.

We do have one very blurry picture of her throwing a penny into the wishing well and then running for dear life with her hands over her ears, but that’s it. She didn’t even want to make her pillow and essentially forced her to do it, though she was a little more willing after she saw Maya make hers.

MayaMakingPillow.jpg

Maya got a Bugs Bunny pillow, and Ali got a Dora pillow, who she does not like at all. It was hard to have this pillow that was supposed to be so special that she absolutely hated, but more on that later.

After doing the pillow, we did Ali’s star, which once again, you can see she just was not thrilled about.
MakingStar1.jpg

I think she was just overwhelmed in general, which made all of her sensory issues that much worse. She did finally make it with Maya’s help and stood there waiting for the star fairy to come take it away.

We are fortunate that it ended up in a very accessible place, so it was not a problem for us to find it once it ended up on the wall.

In fact, my husband, who is 6’4”, was practically face to face with it if he stood on a chair.

I'm enjoying this trip report, I almost missed it somehow and it's up to 3 pages already!!! Sorry I didn't get a chance to connect with you, our vacation was the same week, and the weekend was Rebecca's birthday party, I don't think I've caught up yet! The girls look so happy, I can't wait to read more. :)

Lovin' the updates!!!!! Love the silver lining, the riding (my kids loved that too - most of them at least!) and the castle fun!

Keep it coming!! (like I should talk -- my updates are coming soon too! :sad2: )

Oh Kelli, I love how you are making the most of the moments...and just going with the flow. Your TR is amazing so far, and I love the princess dining, and especially the private moments the girls got to enjoy. THanks for keeping it real...I know it won't be perfect, but it's nice to see that in spite of that, it's still the most special week.

Hi Kelly,
I am in tears reading/seeing the girls with Cinderella and her prince! What a special night!

Give kids the world looks wonderful. Your comments and photos make it seem warm and fuzzy to be there...

Can't wait to read more!
Monica

I am wiping away tears seeing Prince Charming and Cinderella interact with you all so much. Ali meeting the kid at the pool with a gtube is wonderful. I hope Ty meets someone with one that would be great. I also love the pictures of both the girls on the horses. I am sorry Ali was so overwhelmed while doing her star and pillow. One thing that I think about with Ty is that sometimes we forget just how much the little things affect him. Sometimes it can be a smell that sets him off or something we just wouldn't think about. We found out last trip we had to take a step back and go to the hotel for him to be comfortable. And if Ty is tired his sensory is tolerance is way down.

Hugs I can't wait to read more!

Hey there! It would have been great, but I totally understand. I have a number of friends in Sarasota and Jacksonville that I was hoping to see, but things were just so busy as it was. I hope that you had a great vacation and that Rebecca had a fantastic birthday! As for the dresses, funny story - the girls wore them to 1900 Park Fare and Drizella gave them such a hard time. She kept saying that Maya's Aurora dress was an attempt to dress like Anastasia and Ali's Tinkerbelle dress was an attempt to dress like her. We were rolling.:rotfl2:

It's hard, isn't it?! As sorry as I am that you're going through it, too, I was glad to read on the other thread that I'm not the only one experiencing post-wish trip depression.

We really did have a great time. It wasn't everything that I imagined, but in many, many ways, it was so much more. Yes, it would have been nice if we could have used all of our passes. Yes, it would have been nice if Ali enjoyed the parks more than she did. But what we got in exchange is irreplacable.:goodvibes

Hey there! I have to tell you, we got soooooo many compliments on the girls' dresses.:goodvibes We were stopped multiple times with people asking where we got them! It was a wonderful week. We are so, so fortunate to have had the experience we did.

It really was an amazing night, especially considering that we almost didn't even go. I think we totally underestimated Ali's SPD. I mean here, she knows exactly what to expect, but I didn't really pause to think how it might affect her in a place with such extreme sensory overload. It all worked out, but I do wish we had been better prepared for it.

I think today is the day that I will finally unpack.:rolleyes1

After we finished with the Castle of Miracles, we decided to try out the train.
Amberville8509004.jpg

It was a nice little whirl around a part of the village that we hadn’t really explored, so that was nice.
0250Amberville-JJExpress.jpg

Maya loved playing conductor, but Ali again had some issues with the noise.
GirlsTrain.jpg

We only went around once because the train had to charge, so we decided to try our hand at fishing.

Now G-Pa swears he saw a fish so there must have been fish in the pond, but we neither saw anything, nor did the girls catch anything.

They still really enjoyed standing there with their lines in the water.

Later in the week, we discovered that they were much more responsive to bread than fishing hooks. Call it a feeding the ducks experiment that went awry.
Koifish.jpg

It was starting to get hot out, so we gave up on the fishing after an half hour, or so, and went back to the villa to change into our bathing suits for the afternoon. It was amazing how much we were enjoying ourselves just kicking around the village. And the amazing thing is, it was so quiet! Other than the ubiquitous music and occasional family here and there, we had the place to ourselves. It was just what we needed after the craziness of the previous two days.

How wonderful that you enjoyed the village so much. The horseback riding and trains look great.

Im so glad you guys to hang at the village. It truly was an amazing place and it's so neat to see how different families do different things. We spent quite a bit of time hanging out and never did the train or fishing and silly me I forgot all about the playground and never even saw it. Anyway Im glad you had a good time.

I am so sorry that you had a rough time in the begining! I remember when we went for Selah's wish trip last year there was supposed to be a greeter at the Pittsburgh airport and there wasn't one. I did not know this until we had arrived at GKTW and checked in. Our greeter was supposed to give us our travel money. At that time I didn't even know we were supposed to get travel money, lol. I found out when we got to the village. So I called back home and they were so wonderful and apologetic. They ended up fedexing me a check directly to GKTW the next day. I went to Walmart and was able to cash it with no problems.

I am glad that you posted about some of the not so great moments. We did have a few also. Both of my little ones are extremely sensitive to their environments. Crowds and loud noise has always been hard for us because it "revs" them up. So they get EXTREMELY hyperactive. And goodness gracious we don't need that because they are already very active!

I am really happy that you and your family had such a wonderful time. I wish there was more time to do everything! We didn't spend as much time at the village last year and I'm hoping to do more of that this year.

Your girls look so happy and like that had a WONDERFUL time! And it is so true about the wish trip changin you. I haven't been the same since we returned. All of the kindness we encountered was so overwheleming. It was just so hard to believe that people we have never met before were so willing to do so much for us. From the wish granters and the coordinators to the people at the village. Event he volunteers at the park at GKTW were awesome! I am hoping that one day I too can be a volunteer for MAW. I would absolutely LOVE to!!

Please say a quick prayer for Ali, as she is very ill. I'm actually worried about pneumonia, so we are heading to the pediatrician in a few minutes. The big problem is that we don't have any antibiotics to give her, so I'm waiting to hear from her allergist. Not sure what we're doing.

Oh goodness! Prayers already said for Ali....
Keep us posted on how she's doing.....
:grouphug:
Monica

Oh Kelly! So very sorry to hear this. Ali is in my prayers, as is the rest of your family!

I'm praying for your family...and that Ali feels better soon!
