Did any of you see this? We were wondering why a crew member didn't stop him from entering a NO PASSENGER ZONE. I thought there were always "eyes" on the No Passenger areas, especially critical ones, like access to the anchor.

(CNN) -- A Holland America cruise ship was disrupted early Saturday morning by an intoxicated passenger who released the ship's anchor, according to an affidavit obtained by The Smoking Gun website.
California resident Rick Ehlert, 44, released the anchor and a life buoy between 5:25 a.m. and 5:55 a.m., according to the affidavit.
The MS Ryndam was unharmed, but the release of the anchor could have caused "significant damage to the ship's rudder or propeller, which could disable the ship's ability to maneuver, or puncturing of the ship, which could result in sinking or severe flooding," according to the affidavit.
The ship was traveling from Costa Maya, Mexico, to Tampa, Florida.
A surveillance video shows Ehlert taking multiple steps to deploy the anchor while the ship was in motion. The MS Ryndam's maximum speed is 22 knots, which is approximately 25 mph, according to Holland America's website.
Ehlert confessed to dropping the ship's anchor when questioned by special agents from the FBI. He admitted to being intoxicated at the time and detailed the multiple steps he took in deploying the anchor, including entering an area marked as off-limits to passengers.
"There is probable cause to believe on November 27 that Rick Ehlert did attempt to damage, destroy, disable, or wreck a vessel," FBI agent John Manning stated in the affidavit.
Ehlert was arrested Sunday on a felony charge and taken into custody. He has not yet hired an attorney, according to the office of the magistrate who is handling the case.

I'm not a big drinker, but of all the things I can imagine myself doing while drunk, dropping the ship's anchor isn't one of them.
Trying to sail the ship maybe, but dropping anchor???? :rolleyes1

I bought the 2009 Passporter's DCL book and just bought the 2010. If you have never had a Passporters book they are wonderful. However, the updated info from 2009 to 2010 wasnt worth it. I can send you my 2009 if you want it. Heck, I'd even send you the 2010. I wont be able to go on another one for a few years and will buy the book then. PM me with your address

I haven't read any of these, but I just checked my local library and they have several of them. I'd head over there before buying any. :thumbsup2

Just got back from doing errands. Bought the few things I still needed to make Bob's fruitcake. Also took a suitcase to the local shoe repair man to fix the zipper. Finally, picked up a top to wear with black velvet pants on semi-form night, black, tourquoise and amathyst harlequin design in sequins with gold trim on the edges of the neck, long sleeves and bottom. Kind of pretty - now the trick is to still fit into it after the holidays.

It was fun to read all the comments on the fruit cake. Yes, it does have Christmas memories for many of us. When I was little, my grandmother and I use to make the fruitcakes (she was from the UK and had a lot of recipes from home) and then we would deliver them to all the "old" people, relatives and friends. Of course I had to dressup in Sunday clothes to go with her and I always came home with money they would slip to me. I don't remember ever eating the cake or her bourbon balls as a kid though.

Bob & I grew-up pretty differently. I got cracker-jacks and lifesavers in my Xmas stocking. His dad was an imported food and wine buyer. He remembers getting marzipan fruits, swiss chocolate, fruit jellies and fruitcake in his.

Someone asked about how long the cake lasts. I continue to soak it in the madeira after I make it, wrap in cheese cloth and put into my cake tin. After the holidays I sprinkle with more booze, slice it up, wrap them in individual slices and put into tins. They have sooo much booze in them, plus they are mostly candied fruit and nuts they have never gone bad nor dried out - weird.

I would love to have the recipe for stollen (you don't make your own filo dought do you????) Maybe we could exchange our family Christmas recipes. Val

The stollen we make is the traditional Polish one. Ours looks like this (complete with powdered sugar on top). So no filo dough to be made. I'd be more than happy to bring the recipes, the weather has been cool enough in Florida we might also make Chrusciki.
My stepdad was a baker for a very long time. Christmas baking was serious business, it lasted 4 weeks. We made thousands of cookies. They were everyone's Christmas presents (everyone received a stollen and a HUGE tray of cookies). I think this might be the first year my Mom is up to making my stepdad's cookies (he died in 2003). If I have the time, I compile his biggest hits. The dark chocolate dipped almond leaves are my favorite.

The MS Ryndam was unharmed, but the release of the anchor could have caused "significant damage to the ship's rudder or propeller, which could disable the ship's ability to maneuver, or puncturing of the ship, which could result in sinking or severe flooding," according to the affidavit.

We've seen how "secure" the forward anchor decks are on the Wonder and Magic: Just unlatch the manrail gate at the promenade. It probably is no harder to get to the stern anchor on the Ryndam. And the FBI is blowing smoke out its ... stern tubes ... to say that the idiot who released the anchor could have fouled the screws or rudders on a fast-moving ship. (Maybe they just want a hyped up charge so they have some negotiating room to convict on more than "drunk on the high seas.") The anchor would be all the way aft. The ship was steaming. Screw wash and other flow would drag the anchor well clear of the stern.

A sign does not turn a hazardous attraction into a secure area, and no adequate security stopped the drunk during the more than 20 minutes (according to the report's timeline) that he was donning work gloves, throwing pawls, and slacking the brake on the windlass. He was under video surveillance and nobody noticed? It's not just the idiot passenger who should be charged for mopery on the high seas (to use a term popular with "sea lawyers" and crime reporters.)

Hi all

3mmm here. This is a new disname for my son. He's almost 11 and just posted on the tween thread. He's hoping to find some kids to hang out with. If you have a tween, especially if they are boys, please send them over to the tween thread. There's been a little bit of activity recently. Hoping it will increase as the kids get more excited as it gets closer. I'm sure Mitchell would love to commiserate with any other kids out there who have to do school work over Christmas vacation.

My DS will be 11 in May. Once he gets his computer time back then I will have him post on the thread.

Has anyone boght any of these books? are they worth it? i am obviously not goint to get all of them, so what do you think? thanks!

I got the DCL one before our first cruise. I liked the book, certainly helped me learn about the ships etc. I did get an older edition cheaper (it didn't really matter that the info was not all up to date).

Any recipes you have time to share with us - at any time, would be wonderful. I have a few recipes from a baker friend. They make large amounts and the recipe is in pounds and ounces, not cups. Danny's oatmeal cookjies are to die for - especially with the amount of butter in them.

In the past, I've found them very helpful, especially for the 'first timer' at a given park or cruise. The cruise book won't be all that useful for THIS cruise, however, because the excursions and ports they address are the ones from the 3, 4 & 7 day cruises.

I hope everyone has recovered from Thanksgiving!

Yaaaaa, I only have three more things to get for the cruise:

Brown swim shorts for my DD

Dress fittings for DDs and myself

DOCUMENTS!

I am seeing the light!

Boy have you lot been chatty !!!

I can only post quickly, so forgive the lack of names....

Books - I've bought 6 for this trip (incl. DL and WDW books). I love absorbing it all :)

kids posting - I'll have DS write a reply as well as Dd1. He turns 10 on 12/28.

Fruit cake - blech. That said, I am allergic to peanuts, and will not eat a nut of any descriptio. Another peculiarity is I LOVE making them - my parents ask me to make one every year. I also love MY Christmas pudding - I only put in those ingredients I like, and it's delicious. Also love rum balls and truffles - mmmm

Well it's the 1st here, so our advent calendar comes out tonight - perfect, as it is also the number of sleeps until our flight from SYD to LAX !

Back later.

Cheers,
Sally :)

Still no docs here in Central CA -

Still have to order tshirts and do door magnets.

I can't decide what to do first...wrap Christmas presents or pack for the cruise.

I'm getting "no vacation dates available" on the cruise booking website ! Full to capacity ? It certainly has been variable - some days several cabins have been available, other days only a couple, and now... none !

Off to a 2nd class parent get-together !

We have power at home, It took me 2 hours to get to work, It madness all the snow. The beagle girl hates it cause it higher than her bum and she doesnt like to toilet! Orly will pee/poo anywhere as long as its outside.
My poor little pony ..her belly is touching the snow... I cant think of ever having so much snow any time never mind in november.

Your poor girl beagle and pony. Typical male though, going anywhere!!!;):lmao:

Glad your power is back. We were supposed to have a whole load more snow last night, but it went south of us, so just an extra light coveting for us. I think we are at about 8". We had a parcel delivery yesterday and the guy said our road was the worst he had seen!!

Hopefully going to trudge into town today but it is very cold today. Mind you, I think you have VERY low temperatures.

Knock on wood - we won't have "no power" ever again. Last Friday, we had a standby generator installed.

Thats what we need, we alwys getting power cuts, always nearly the same time of year, the geese fly into the power lines.

WELL GUESS WHAT !!??

SO now I am at work, I cant get home!!!!!
The forth road bridge is closed so end off..
There are alternative roads more inland but that would take forever and probably just plain stupid.
I could go and get a train home, but then I would have to walk 5 miles to get home as no buses, also the trouble with that is dad would insist on trying to drive me and thats not fair. Then there getting back........ again.

Mum and Dad has there furry granbabes for the day so I will sit tight.
Also, add to that no running for nearly a week now and I am getting all twitchy..lol.
Bored bored bored , over and out.....
Have a great day everybody, and those lucky peeps in FL:cool2:
wish I was with you, Lynne

Oh Lynne, that is terrible. Maybe it will reopen soon and you can get away. Most of the country now is having major problems, though that isn't any consolation to you being stuck at work.

Geez, Lynne - what a complete bummer ! Pity you're not stuck at home unable to get to work. Sorry, that's no help, is it ? ;) I hope you can sort out something ! :wizard:

CHeers,
Sally :)
