From the July 12, 1999 issue of New York Magazine.

An Interesting article, especially considering the source, I always associate New York MAgazine with covering NY Teen and Pre-Teen Jewish Kid's, Cruel Intentions like lives. (I used to work at a library, I read a lot of magazines. :)

The subscriber list actually runs from mid twenty somethings to retireies - people who have been reading it for many years who keep their subscriptions when they move from the NY/NJ/CT metro area because they want to keep in touch with the City. I don't think many teenagers (Jewish or other) are an important demonographic for them, not very much in the magazine to interest them.. A very large readership for what is really a locally oriented publication.

This article is 2 year old - has anything really changed? Except to go further down hill?

Exactly JudySue. That's why I posted it in the first place. Even though it's two years old, nothing has changed, except maybe more of the same.

Well, Peter, DisDuck, Captain, JimB, et. al. Can you answer JudySue's Question?

Things that have changed:
And ABC -- forget about it!
Well, the Millionaire thing is still keeping the afloat, barely. But it was exciting for a while.
The company's two most influential shareholders are Sid Bass and Warren Buffett
I don't think either of these gentlemen retain major holdings in Disney any more.

Thanks for the Article DVC-Landbaron, it's interesting to see what was going on during the Eisner/Katzenberg split and how little has changed. I think it's time for Eisner to pass the torch, the problem is who should he pass it to?

Sarangel

Just FYI, JudySue, I wasn't suggesting that that was who read the magazine, only that that was what every article in the magazine was about. My favorite being the article about the one-upsmanship in planning Bar/Bas-mitzphas.(Flying entire groups of pre-teens to the french Rivera.

As for the article, I thought Sid Bass was still a majority Shareholder. Warren just bailed.

To tell you the truth DVC & HBK, I am tired of the whole Eisner debate. Yes, maybe he has run his course. Yes, his replacement should not be Pressler.

But you know I still enjoy going. The parks are still maintained better than any other park I have been to in the last 5 years. I am not into coasters so WDW has just the right mix of rides & shows for me. I still get tearied eye when I walk under the railroad and see the castle.

Each one of us seems to have this idolized view of what WDW is supposed to be and if just one thing is out of align then the whole is no good.

Go or don't go. But I just get too depressed by all the negativity. And its not just on Eisner. Take Atlantis for example, prior to its opening today there was a lot of negative posting going on. Well, from those who saw the preview showings last week and Roger Ebert's review, this is a wow picture. He called the climax better the the ballroom scene from Beauty.

It seems that some have problems separating their dislike of Eisner from the company itself. Yes he is the chief buck stops here guys and is a micro-manager type guy but do you really think that on a day to day basis he impacts how a particular CM acts. Or how quickly maintenance cleans up during the day.

Another example of over-reacting and putting the blame on Eisner. The union contract (voted down) and the underwear issue. All of the original reports (coming from union sources) made it out like it was the garments worn next to skin. Finally, someone is was a character (& still knows someone who is a character) indicated that these garments are what is worn over your next to the skin underwear. So there was something between you and the clothes. Now the CM can take these items home and wash it themselves. Big deal. Actually, you should be bashing Eisner for this move as it saves Disney laundry expenses and pushes the cost onto the CM. You see if one tries hard enough anything can be turned around as an Eisner issue.

So unless something outrageous is posted that I feel compelled to answer SO LONG, GOODBYE. See you on other issues. Off to DL/DCA in November.

I personally can't wait to see Atlantis. I'm not sure how Disney-ish it will be, but I'm really excited to see it...

You know what....I get that same feeling entering the Magic Kingdom.....but....do you get that same feeling when entering Animal? How about letting me know if you get that same feeling when entering DCA.

The point many of us make is this. Walt's ideals and his fingerprints stil exist today in HIS parks. Much of the magic you feel is "left-overs" from his ideals. So many of the new addittions to the parks are ho-hum.

No I don't think Eisner is helping out in the parks. But he is the one who approves the budget cuts which in turn increases the work load on the remaining employees....which in turn causes things to be left out of place. So you're darned right I hold him responsible.

BUT....take a look at the latest issue of the Disney Magazine. In the letters section, there is a picture of Walt surrounded by a family in Disney Land. It seems the power went out in the park, and this family found Walt helping out in Future World. That's what made the man a legend.

There's a saying....don't make someone do something you wouldn't do yourself. Do you think ANYONE could question their jobs if Walt was out there working right along side them?

Have a blast in California.

See Dis. It's just this kind of thinking that is so hard to refute. But refute I must, because it's just simply not true. I can and have, on occasion, made up lists of Disney 'MAGIC' with the best of them. I can and have given glowing accounts of the 'State-of-the-Parks'. All (well, most at least) of my Ei$ner problems are quickly forgotten as I turn off I-4 and head for my home away from home. But that doesn't take away from the fact that the corporate philosophy is slowly but surely ruining the company. And I fear that before to long, the build up of goodwill, directly from Walt himself, will not be enough to keep my spirits up when I'm there. And on that day, Disney will become just another profit driven company to me. Still probably a very fun place to go. A vacation destination every five years or so. But NOT a semi-obsession. Not somewhere that I'd likely bookmark on my computer. Just a company that I use. No more - no less. I like to drink Coke. I'm not obsessed with the "Coke-Magic". I like Whoppers once in while. I don't have their company's site bookmarked though. See the difference? I'm worried that my kids, or their kids, will not have that special feeling I have when they walk under the tracks and catch a glimpse of the castle for the first time in a year or so.

That's one of the reasons I don't like lists. We can all do our own list that would run on for pages and pages. It simply misses the point. Sometime we seem to be talking about bricks and mortar (maintenance, seeing workmen, etc.) But what we're really circling around, and sometimes even directly addressing, is really soooo much more!! It is the management philosophy and the all important guest experience. SHOW. Disney touch. Call it what you will!!

At the risk of sounding very repetitive - YES!! He sets the tone for the entire conglomerate by word and deed. It is his philosophy, both explicit and tacit, that his minions follow. Yes, my dear Duck, HE IS RESPONSIBLE!!! You can't separate Ei$ner from the company because He is the company!!! Or at least HIS management philosophy is.
So unless something outrageous is posted that I feel compelled to answer SO LONG, GOODBYE. See you on other issues. Off to DL/DCA in November.
I hoping this is outrageous enough. ;) But if it isn't, let me say I fully understand your desire to take a break. We all have at one time or another. But I would appreciate a promise from you. When you get back from DCA, with eyes wide open, post a State-of-DCA address. I really want to hear your perspective on it. I truly have great respect for you. Thanks for all the wonderful conversations!!!

Just for HBK, yes I get the same feeling at Animal Kingdom, at Epcot and at MGM. But that is my personal taste.

I can still be found on the debate board and maybe here too if the subject is worthwhile (ie. not the same thing over and over again).

For DVC,, there will be a report with eyes open (I can't find a pair of rose-colored slip-ons for my glasses). But not being a perfectionist about Walt (growing up in the 50's with just Walt movies and TV, I did not get hooked on parks) I just might like DCA for its own merits, not in relationship to DL or WDW. I shall see.

Signed, Mike Eisner...

Seriously...

If that's the case, then we really have nothing to argue about.

I can't see what would make someone all misty eyed about Animal, but if you do, then god bless you.

By your words (meant or not) you dismiss my opinion of Animal Kingdom. I have no problem if you don't like it or think it is a half day park. I find it a full day park. Each of us have different likes/dislikes, does not make one better than the other. Yet you sometimes write like that.

Duck,

Unlike your post in another thread, which you seem to be carrying over here, I do not feel I dismissed your feelings about Animal. Quite the contrary....

I can't see what would make someone all misty eyed about Animal, but if you do, then god bless you

I am telling you I don't see what you see in Animal Kingdom. I just don't.

But you do, so god bless you. You can enjoy that park much more than I can. So I'm telling you that is great for you.

Each of us have different likes/dislikes, does not make one better than the other.

It makes you better off than me. You can enjoy that park more than I can if you get all teary eyed just by entering it.
