Let me introduce you to the cast:

Me: Kate, Mother of 7 year old identical twin boys, trip planner, and marketing exec.
DH: John, Dad of twins and TV production engineer
Seth: son
Nigel: son

This was Seth & Nigel’s first trip to Disney ever and my husband’s first trip back since he was a child. We had wanted to bring the boys to Disney for a few years and were waiting for the right time and best deal. With the 40% off low-season room rates and the free meal plan, we knew this was our best opportunity. Taking the boys, while Disney was still magical, but when they were old enough and tall enough to appreciate the thrill rides that my husband and I love was important to us. Seth and Nigel are train fanatics, and CR was the resort they have always wanted to go to. Every time they have seen the resort on TV, they have said they wanted to stay there some day. I kept checking dates and rates and finally, magically was able to get us booked in the CR, in a Garden Wing, December 4 – 8, at a rate I’ve never seen before. We used points for our airline tickets and were able to make the trip affordable.

The trip was a surprise for Seth & Nigel and miraculously we were able to keep it a secret. We didn’t tell anyone we were going, because we were afraid someone might spill the beans. Disney almost ruined the surprise by mailing us an envelope after we made the reservations that Seth & Nigel intercepted. Nigel had just started reading “Richardson Family, We are looking….” When I saw him and snatched it out of his hands. The rest of the letter was “ forward to your visit to Disney World” and confirming the reservation. I made an excuse that it was an advertisement for Disney and handed the boys the brochures for the parks that were enclosed. They talked about how much they wanted to go to Disney and I said, “Maybe someday.”

For months I worked on the dinner reservations, studied the message board for tips and tricks, and touringplans.com for the best parks to visit on the best days. I had picked this time of year because the crowds were supposed to be really low, which was super important to us. I have to say that I was crushed when I discovered that in spite of all my careful planning that the weekend we were going to be there was the weekend when the Christmas Parade was filmed. The days we had planned to go to MK were listed as 8 out of 10 on touring plans. UUUUUUUUUUGH! Then when we tried to book the restaurants we wanted, none of them were available. Hmmm, free dining wasn’t looking so great, but I tried not to panic. Kept checking back and had some really good luck calling dining rather than booking on line and were able to get some good reservations. By the time the trip came, we were pretty happy with the ADRs we had scored.

Morning of the Trip – Friday, December 4
Seth & Nigel thought they were going to school. We even went so far as making them study for their spelling tests the night before, and getting dressed in their uniforms for school. A few minutes before they were supposed to go to school, I came out with Mickey t-shirts with their names printed on them. I tossed the boys their shirts and said they needed to change. They looked at me like I was nuts and then looked at the shirts and said “why?” I told them they were not going to school today, but were going to Disney World instead! We videotaped this moment, which you can see here on You Tube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiHeYAfdwRo

Their response was precious. They were shocked at first then started asking tons of questions: “When were we going? Were we flying? Where were we staying?” It was an awesome way to start the trip!

So after some final packing, we were off to the airport for our 11:20 direct flight on SW from Nashville to Orlando. We got to the airport and found out our flight was delayed. The plane was coming from Texas, where snow was causing the delay. Thankfully it made it in and we were only about a half hour late to FL. We landed to a light rain, but I kept thinking “Well, it always rains in the afternoon here; surely it will blow right over.” All week we had been watching the weather forecasts and it was looking great – low to mid 70s with sunny skies – wahoo!! I checked the forecast when we landed on my iPhone and was crushed. The forecast had nose-dived and was now 50s and 60s with rain the whole time. Nooooooooooooooooo, it can’t be true. I started praying right then and didn’t stop for 48 hours, please don’t let our vacation be ruined, please.

Knowing we would make the best of it, we headed off to the Magical Express. Super easy with our pre-arranged tickets in hand. We only waited a few minutes before we boarded the bus to the CR. Comfortable ride on the bus, not crowded, and it was very exciting to see the DW gates and then the CR for the first time. Seth and Nigel were exploding with excitement and ran into the resort. We arrived around 3:30 p.m.. I had requested a third floor Garden Wing room with Bay view and received just that. It was even better in that we had a great view of the monorail track too! Seth & Nigel were in heaven. We had done advance check-in online, and the experience at the counter was smooth. Cast member was very nice.

We checked out our room, which was extremely clean. Loved it! Dropped our stuff and decided to head to MK for the last few hours the park was open and a CS dinner. MK was only open until 7:00 before the Mickey’s Magical Christmas, which we didn’t have tickets for.

“Surely This Rain Will Stop”
It was downright chilly out, but the rain had almost stopped, so we decided to head to the park. (I had my heart set on getting to MK as soon as possible.) We were all wearing our one pair of long pants, long sleeve shirts, and jackets that we had packed. We hopped on the monorail, and our train lovers were giddy. Arriving at the MK, we jump off the train and head down the ramp, and just as we step out towards the gates the skies let loose. Pouring rain! We ran for the gift shop right outside of the gate and paid $30 for ponchos. Ouch! My DH asked how much the umbrella was, but decided against it when we found out it was $40. Double ouch. Have to say that gouge did not give us a very nice “Welcome to Disney” feeling.

Soaked, but still determined not to let it get us down, we ran up the stairs and got on the train. It was the closest indoor thing we could find and our first ride! We got off in Frontier Land and decided to give Thunder Mountain Railroad a try. Thankfully the rain had almost stopped. Hooray! Maybe this would work out okay after all. We got on the train – wow, there was no line at all – amazing. Just as the train pulled out of the station, again the skies let loose. I’ll tell you; this ride is no fun at all with pouring rain pelting your face. By the end of the ride, we all cried “Uncle” and decided to give up. Seth & Nigel were shivering, and I had to admit that I was trying too hard to “make this work.”

Seriously depressed and ridiculously wet, we walked back to the CR. We got to our room to find that our luggage had not arrived yet. I pulled off my shoes to discover I had huge blisters on the back of both ankles. I was wearing shoes I had walked miles and miles in while on vacation in Italy the year before without issue, but I guess the rain had caused the damage. You have got to be kidding me? Our first afternoon, pouring rain and now blisters! UUUuuugh!

We stripped the boys down and put them into a hot bath to warm them up. It had been over three hours since our arrival, and we were just about to call and see where our bags were when there was a knock at the door – our bags! Yes, dry clothes! Things had to turn around!

We gave up on going out and decided just to order room service. It took an hour to arrive, but the food was great. The boys had rainbow bread grilled cheeses with fries. I had a tuna salad sandwich with pasta salad, and John had the steak sandwich. John said his sandwich was amazing. Finally fed and warm, we decided to explore the CR. I wanted a piece of chocolate cake to raise my spirits, and my DH and I both wanted a drink.

Seth and Nigel bee-lined for the Fantasia gift shop and the Monorail Christmas tree. We found some die-cast metal monorails for the boys, which became their favorite souvenir of the entire trip. Looking for the cake became comical. Tried the Contempo Café, and they were sold out of all cake for the day. The CM said sorry that they had been very busy. Tried the market, which became our saving grace…no chocolate cake, but they had band-aids, mole skin for my ankles and bottles of wine for our soul! The wine was actually affordable – I think we paid $12 or $14 for a bottle of Copella Cab or Merlot. Not a bad price at all, but still no chocolate cake… Walked into the lobby of The Wave to see if maybe I could get a piece to-go, but it was so mobbed I couldn’t even get to the hostess desk to ask. It was the same with the check-in area at California Grille. Decided to give up and headed back to the room for a glass of wine.

While the boys played with their monorails, my DH and I made a game plan for Saturday and dealing with the bad weather. The forecast was for more rain in the morning, gradually stopping in the afternoon, but cloudy and cold all day. The touringplans recommended Epcot and since a lot of the Future World is indoors, we decided this was our best option. We also had reservations at Tokyo for TS dinner. The problem was that due to the bad weather the parade was now probably going to be taped the day we wanted to go to MK. I just kept praying and thinking, “This will get better, it has to get better, this will get better.”

Day 2 – Saturday, December 5
We got up early and ate breakfast at Contempo Café using four CS meals from our plan. I have to say I didn’t care for the breakfast food here at all. Basically McDonald’s quality scrambled eggs, French toast and waffles. We did like that we were able to take bottles of water with us for the park later. We also had a very nice CM give us pointers on what the best use of our snack credits would be. (Ice cream or popcorn in the parks rather than buying the $2.00 cereal box my son wanted.)

Seth & Nigel spent breakfast looking over the wall at Chef Mickey’s and I was sad that I had not been able to get them a reservation for the restaurant at all. They kept hearing the party and wanted to go in. I told them I was sorry, but that we wouldn’t be able to go there.

The weather was cooperating and we were hopeful for a great day. It was still cold and there was light rain, but much better than the night before. We made it to EPCOT just after rope drop and entered the park without issue. There was a big line for the Photopass photographers, so we decided to skip the wait and headed for Soarin’. We grabbed fast passes and got in line. 15 minute wait and road our first great ride. Wahoo! Our spirits were much better! We were finally feeling the Disney magic. Our entire family loved the ride. So, much fun! Glad we grabbed fast passes too, because by the time we got off the ride the wait was up to 45 minutes.

Next we walked across to Test Track, where we were able to ride pretty quickly. Sign said 20 minutes, but it seemed more like 10. Test Track in the spitting rain was a little cold, but still fun. Not my favorite ride, but worth going on. I liked the tight banking curves with the heavy “G’s.” Seth and Nigel were not crazy about it. We were able to put the photo of our family on the Photopass, which was nice. The pic wound up being our first photo on the pass.

test-track.jpg

Had to head back to Soarin’ to use our Fast Passes and loved walking right up to the ride, with maybe a 10 minute wait! Felt the love of the Fast Passes for the first time and were happy we had done our homework on how to use them! We decided to ride “Living with The Land” boats next since there was no wait at all. Seth and Nigel absolutely loved this ride. So funny! Nice calm boat ride through hydroponic gardens. So interesting! I remembered the ride from when I was a child and it was still fun.

Had lunch at Sunshine Seasons and it was amazing! The first great DP meal we had. Seth had roasted chicken, Nigel had mac n’ cheese, and John and I both had soup and salad. Have to say that it was very confusing at check-out to find out that on the plan you could only have soup or salad not both, so we had to use snack credits for our soups, but that we did get desserts so I had to go back over and get them at the other counter after I paid. But the great news was finally I got my chocolate cake! The desserts here were great! I got two huge cake slabs to go in a plastic container, which I munched on the rest of the trip. Things were really, really looking up! The salads were delish! I wish that all the parks would add a Sunshine Seasons to their restaurant line-ups.

Next we road the Nemo ride in our clam-mobiles and enjoyed the aquarium. So cool to see a Manatee in real life for the first time! I think we probably spent close to an hour in the exhibits.

nigel-shark.jpg

We got in line at the character meet and greet, but it was really long. I asked the CM if it was worth waiting or if we should try the Disney Card meet and greet later in the afternoon. She said definitely to do the special Visa character encounter and told me where we needed to go. Really helpful! She said she would see us there as she was working it too.

Stopped for some ice cream using two snack credits for the boys…huge waffle cones with scoops of vanilla and found that finally the rain had stopped. It was still cold and windy, but getting better. Even saw a moment of sun. We had time for one more ride before the character meeting, so we did Spaceship Earth (the big ball.) Seth and Nigel didn’t want to go on it, but we talked them into it and they loved it. The ride wound up being one of their favorites of the day.

After that we went to Innovations for the meet and greet. The line wasn’t that long, but it moved very slowly. We didn’t understand why until we got inside. They were taking one family in at a time to meet the characters in private. So cool! We had Mickey, Goofy and Minnie all to ourselves for a few mins with the Photopass photographer. Hooray! The boys had fun playing video games in the building while we were waiting in line. The look on their faces when they got to meet Mickey was priceless. I’ve never seen them grin so wide. They got their first autographs in their $1.00 Toy Story blank books I had pre-purchased for them at home at Michael’s. Pre-buying the books was a great money saver!

characters.jpg

Next we walked to the World Showcase. Road the Mexico boat ride and got a beer. Followed the boys running through the crowds towards Japan where we had dinner reservations at Tokyo. (video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtvkKmWNOPE)

Seth and Nigel loved the Garden trains in Germany and spent probably 20 minutes just watching them. It was cold out, but we were having fun.

We love Japanese food, and were looking forward to a good dinner. We arrived at Japan in time to see the end of the drum concert. We checked in 15 minutes early for our 4:40 reservations as the ADRs suggest, but were not seated until around 5:00 p.m.. That made for a 30 minute wait. We were really hungry by the time we were seated. I ordered a large hot sake, which hit the spot! John had a Japanese beer. I am primarily a vegetarian and the waitress, who was really sweet, brought me the vegetarian menu. There was a veggie tempura and veggie sushi combo dinner that was amazing. So, so delicious. I was in heaven! John had some sort of large sushi combo dinner which he also said was good. The boys had chicken teriyaki and chicken tempura, which was served in a platter that looked like a monorail car. This thrilled the boys. For dessert I had the chocolate ginger cake, but my DH decided not to have anything as he was full. The ginger cake was ok, but nothing I would order again.

Overall dinner was very good and we would definitely eat there again. I think next time I would request a seat by the windows though. We were seated in the back of the restaurant near the sushi making area, but against the open wooden slatted wall next to the waiting area. While we were eating we kept seeing the hungry customers waiting to be seated coveting our plates. It was a little much after a while to constantly have people staring at you while you were eating, but we didn’t let it spoil our meal.

After dinner we shopped downstairs at the Japan store where there were great Pokeman toys. Seth and Nigel enjoyed seeing how a pearl is harvested from an Oyster. The women working at the counter were great and thought the boys were really cute.

Next we road the boat back around half of the showcase and headed out towards the front of the park. We picked up our free 5X7 at the photo place and had a couple more photos taken with the PP photographers in front of the big ball.

It was such a relief to have a great day, and we felt like the vacation was finally on track! Hooray!!!

Day 3 – Sunday, December 6
Magic Kingdom

Finally we woke up to a day without rain. It was still cold, but at least we had sun. We had our hearts set on going to the MK, so even though we knew the parade taping would be that day we decided to go. We are early risers; well I should say our boys are early risers, so each day we were at breakfast by 7:30 at the latest. Early before it got crowded was our favorite time to be on 4th floor of the CR.

Disney-iphone002.jpg

(Breakfast at Contempo - boys standing on back wall of seats to see into Chef Mickey's)

No line at all at the Contempo Café, but another mediocre breakfast. My husband tried the egg sandwich, which we discovered was the best item on the adult breakfast list. Kids enjoyed the waffles. They continued to stare over the wall at Chef Mickey’s, and it made me pretty sad that we couldn’t get a reservation there. We were however happy to not have to wait in the CM line. The one thing that is great about Contempo Café for our boys is watching the monorails come in and out of the lobby. They just love seeing the trains and would call out each time one arrived and bet each other about which color the next train would be.

The Magic Begins!

rope-drop-1.jpg

Took the Monorail to MK and made it 15 minutes before rope drop. Took the advice of several posters and headed way left once we entered the ticket area. We were able to make our way through the crowd up very close to the front. Not a great position to see the opening ceremony from, but great for getting through the gates fast. Our goal was to make it to Dumbo for a few rides before the line was oppressive. We held the boys up so they could see a bit of the ceremony and the all jumped up and down together screaming the countdown from 10 – 1. It was really fun and exciting. I highly recommend making it to rope drop. The perfect launch to a magic day…

The minute we made it through the arch under Main Street Station, we ran into ropes chording off Main Street for the parade. Big camera booms and lots of production equipment. Main Street was completely blocked, so people couldn’t walk down the street. Cast members were herding all the guests into very narrow lines funneling us down the sidewalks of the street. It caused quite a traffic jam and we were immediately worried that coming to MK this day might have been a bad idea.

Saw lots of staged rehearsals going on with dancers and crowd members waving scarves in a choreographed sequence in front of the castle and snuck around it too the left. (Heard later in the day that this was the Jonas Brothers performance rehearsal)

We bee-lined straight back to Fantasy Land. The CMs were holding people for a little while until we could enter the area. Once they let us in, my DH and sons went right to Dumbo, and I headed to Space Mountain for Fast Passes as suggested by TouringPlans.com. I grabbed the fast passes and headed back to Dumbo, where my guys had already gone on the ride and the carousel. They wanted to go back on Dumbo, so this time I went on with the boys. In that short ten minutes, the wait time for the ride was already up to 20 minutes.

dumbo-350.jpg

After Dumbo, we road Peter Pan and a Small World. I just love Peter Pan, one of my favorites and I was thrilled to see how much the boys loved it too. My husband joked that Small World should be used for interrogating terrorism suspects instead of water boarding. Make the suspects ride the ride over and over until they crack. After a second go on Peter Pan, we decided to make our way towards Space Mountain to use our fast passes. See Seth's funny comment about Small World here.

mk-freeway.jpg

On the way we road the Grand Prix Raceway, which the boys loved. I remember what a rush it was as a child to be able to really drive a car for the first time, and was excited to share the experience with them. You can see the sheer delight on Nigel’s face as he drives.

nigel-driving.jpg

The Space Mountain fast passes were great. Practically walked onto the ride with very little wait. The renovated Space Mountain is darker than it used to be. I remember seeing the reflections of the other cars whizzing around you as you road the ride. Now it is pitch black and you can’t see any other cars. I have to say I liked it better the other way. The ride itself is still the same jerky coaster. Fun, but not my favorite coaster at DW.

Next up was two spins on the Medway People Mover – which is now called something like the Blue Line. Being train freaks, my kids loved this simple ride around Tomorrow land. They didn’t want to ride the Buzz Lightyear ride, and I’m not sure why. We were trying to hit as many attractions as we could, before the park became oppressively crowded, but I realized the pace was a bit too much for the boys so we slowed down.

castle.jpg

By this time the park started getting thick with visitors. I have to say though that in spite of the crowds Disney had every lane at every ride open and full-staffed, so the wait times were minimal. We walked back to Fantasy Land for lunch at Pinocchio Village Haus. We used TS credits for pizza and fries for kids and Mediterranean salads for us. I picked the chicken off the salad, but ate the rest and it was good for fast food. Also came with Chocolate cake for dessert. LOL! More cake. They certainly give you tons of food on the dining plan. We were stuffed. Seth and Nigel loved the little pizzas. They kept giving the boys packages of grapes with their meals, which they don’t eat, but I took them and ate them as snacks along the way.

Next up was the Haunted Mansion! This is one of my favorite rides, so I was really looking forward to going it again. The boys were a little scared, but we told them that the ghosts were really having a party and the ghosts getting in the car with you at the end of the ride. They decided to give it a go and loved it. This was probably our longest wait of the day. Sign said 15 minutes, but really it wound up being more like 20 – 25. To me this ride encompasses the full magic of Disney – great story, a little scary, a little funny, comfortable cars, amazing special effects – nothing like it anywhere else in the world. Wish I could ride it again right now! It must be a fun ride for the CMs to work on. Love their costumes.

The boys were starting to get tired and a little cranky. Me I could go all day and all night at the park and wanted to go on everything, but DH and I realized the boys needed to take a break. We decided to do a couple more rides and then head back to the hotel for a while. We had ADRs for Sanaa at Animal Kingdom Lodge at 4:40 p.m., but decided we didn’t think we were going to be able to make them and needed to wing-it for dinner. I really wanted to see the Castle lighting that night and knew we wouldn’t be able to stay beyond 7:00 pm due to the Mickey Christmas party that we didn’t have tickets for.

We headed towards Frontier land and grabbed the boys some ice creams with two snack credits. Wound up getting caught up in a little traffic jam from the parade going by, but circumnavigated it and grabbed fast passes for Thunder Mountain Railroad. Sat down outside of Pirates of the Caribbean and finished the ice creams. Road Pirates which I loved as kid, but didn’t like as much as an adult. The boys liked it, but didn’t love it. I thought they would like it better. Our passes were good, so we boarded the train. The wait on the stand by line was 45 minutes, but we boarded really quickly with the Fast Passes. Love that system! This time the ride in the sun was a joy. It is much more fun without rain pelting your face. LOL! My husband shot a video of our ride which you can watch here on YouTube.

In a perfect full circle from our rainy start on Friday night, we jumped on the railroad and road it back to Main Street this time in the warm sun. Seth & Nigel even got to say “All Aboard” as the guest conductors. While I really wanted to spend more time in the park, taking a break wound up being a better idea.

Afternoon Break at CR
We took the Monorail back to the hotel and headed back to the room. Since we arrived at the CR the boys had been begging us to go to the pool. While it wasn’t really swimming weather, in fact the life guards had outfits on that looked like ski-suits, we headed to the pool. I was happy to sit in the hot tub and Seth and Nigel loved the water slide. Perfect slide – fun but not too scary. I even went down the slide a few times. The pool water is heated, so it wasn’t too bad. Playing in the water was the perfect wind down we all needed.

pool-cr.jpg

Dinner Dilema
After an hour at the pool we relaxed in the room for awhile and got dressed for dinner and a visit back to the park. Our goal was to make it to the park by 6:00 p.m. for the tree lighting. Earlier in the day I called Disney dining to see if there was any way we could get a reservation at 4:30 or 5:00 at The Wave or California Grill, but not luck. Tried anything at the Polynesian, no luck, anything at the park, no luck, anything at the Grand Floridian, no luck…finally the reservation CM wished us luck and suggested maybe we go in person to the restaurants and see if we could wait for a table. I was a bit nervous, but it was our only option. Around 4:30 we went down to The Wave, but discovered they don’t even open until 5:30, which wasn’t going to get us to the park by 6:00. We hopped the Monorail to the Polynesian and headed to Kona Café. We checked in there at 4:45 with the hostess, who said they would be happy to seat us at 5:00 when the restaurant opened. They gave us a pager and said we could walk around the lobby and shop or explore.

We loved the vibe at the Polynesian and the décor was delightful. Feels like you are at an island, which we actually preferred to the modern design of the CR. We shopped at the main gift shop downstairs in the lobby. Seth started a pin collection selecting a lanyard and his first pin and Nigel bought some hysterical Mickey Mouse big yellow feet slippers.

Our pager buzzed, and we were seated right away. The staff at Kona Café could not have been nicer. We had a top notch waitress, who was delightful and gave us great suggestions on the menu. I wish I had jotted down her name, but I didn’t. The meal starts with yummy bread with sweet butter – I think it had hazelnuts in the butter. Delish. John and I both had fruity drinks, my fav, and the boys had lemonade with special light-up Lightening McQueen clips, which I knew would be fun for them to play with in the park after dark. For entres the boys had hotdogs with rice and fries, I had the shrimp and pan seared scallops and John had the New York strip. The children’s meals come with make your own Sundaes and the adult meals come with a choice of any dessert. The dessert choice was almost impossible to make as they all looked amazing. To keep with the Chocolate Cake theme, I had the Kona Cone with ice cream and a cup of coffee. I definitely want to eat at Kona Café again. The veggie sides on each of the meals were so good, I think I would ask them to make me a special veggie plate next time.

castle-mk.jpg

Back to the Park
We jumped on the monorail and made it back to MK about 30 seconds after the castle was lit. We missed the big build up, but caught the end of the celebration where they turned it off and flashed it on again. The castle is stunningly beautiful with the holiday lights in real life. It is hard to describe how gorgeous the lights are. We posed a couple of times with PhotoPass photographers to get an image with the castle. We enjoyed walking around for the last hour of the park being open and spent some time shopping in Frontierland at the pin trading post. Nigel decided to join in the fun selecting his lanyard and first pin. We also selected a Mickey Christmas Ornament frame for a photo of our trip for our tree.

castle-night.jpg

We wound up being the last family they allowed into the store without arm bands for the Christmas party. The staff locked us in and allowed us to shop while they brought out some exclusive merchandise for the party. It looked like they were putting out some collector’s edition pins. After we paid we started to head back towards Main Street. The CMs had started roping off areas and were funneling visitors without arm bands towards the park exit. It is amazing the way they transform the park for the special night. They had snow machines on the roofs of the buildings on Main Street, so it was really snowing. It was magical. I wanted to stay for the party and parade, but with two more park days left in the trip, I knew it would be too much for the boys to stay up that late.

Due to the huge crowds leaving the park, we decided to walk back to the CR. It was a fun end to a great day.

You little guys look like they had a blast! Which how could they not, they are in WDW:cool1:

I am glad you were able to eat at Kona, their food is sooo good. We ate their last year for the first time and its now on our "must do" list. So good.

Great TR:thumbsup2

Can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip!

I am enjoying reading your TR, especially since we were there the same time, even MK on Sunday with the parade crowds! It sounds as if we were within several feet of each other at rope drop. There is a link to my TR in my signature, if you are interested. Can't wait to read more!
