from gold to silver???

Hey Budget minded friends.....I'm wondering if any of you have had your gold jewelry changed to silver by some sort of process?? I have gold diamond stud earrings and a gold tennis bracelet that I would wear much more often if they were silver.....can you do this?? What do you think it would cost and do you think its a good idea??

Well, you can't really turn gold into silver But you can have your yellow gold dipped in platinum to give it a platinum finish. I had my yellow gold wedding ring dipped (I'd actually had it cut off when I was pregnant and had to have it put back together again, so I decided to have it dipped in the process, so I'm not sure how much it costs). I'm kind of bummed because I wear the band all the time, and after a year the color is definitely fading back to the yellow gold again, wheras my engagement ring is still platinum, so they look a little funny when worn together.

You can change yellow gold jewelry so that it has a silver finish by having it plated with rhodium.

I'm not an alchemist but I'm fairly certain that you can't "turn" gold into silver. You CAN however have it dipped or plated with rhodium (which is a metal and element). Be aware that the rhodium coating will wear off over time and the yellow color will show through. You will need it plated periodically.

I have and love it. Many compliments. It does eventually wear off. I had to have it redone. About every year and a half or so.

That is actually what white gold is. Yellow gold dipped in rhodium. It is reversible and does retain the value.

Or you could sell the gold jewelry and buy silver replacements. You'll probably even have some money left over.

I beg to differ. White gold is an alloy of yellow gold with a "white" metal, which can be nickel. My DH has had a solid white gold wedding ring for nearly 30 years--I assure you, in no way is it plated!

Gigi22 is correct, And just to complicate things even more, often white gold is dipped in Rhodium which gives it a slightly more shiny finish like platinum.
