From Caracas to WDW. Our September '08 Trip: A (small) report.

Dining with Mickey, our last character meal of the trip.

The next morning (Friday 09/12/2008) was to be the second (and last) of our “rest” days. You must remember, of course, that in this particular trip Rest = Shopping. Also, our rental car was scheduled to be returned at mid-afternoon, so this particular day promised to be an uneventful and quiet one... (for a change :) )

We got early, took our time and had our regular breakfast at the food court. Afterwards, having made most of our shopping some days before, went back to the Florida Mall and, of course, got a little lost again.

Got my bearings on and returned the family to the resort, just before driving to the Car & Care Center, and filling the gas tank at more than $3.20 per gallon! Let’s just hope we don’t see those prices again!!. The Alamo van got me back to the resort where we just rested a little before our next ADR.

Visiting Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary Resort.

Soon it was time to another trip to the Contemporary, in this occasion by bus and monorail. Our ADR was near closing time and, in fact, I think we were one of the last families seated that night. Even so, it was quite crowded when we arrived.

As soon as we arrived to the desk we were led by a photographer, somewhat aggressively, toward a side area where he took us some photos. These photos are available, of course, at an additional price, and were shown to us later on, during our meal. This is something I knew about, having read about it on the DIS and, in fact, I wanted to have some “official” family photo of our dinner. Nevertheless, I think that the way they do this is not the most subtle one. I suspect that it is many the unwary guest that would feel forced to buy the photos after all this hassle.

As in the other character dinners, we were told about who to expect (Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto and Donald), how (they are going to visit each table), what to do (have camera and autograph books ready) and what not to do (do not stand up for them until they arrive to your table, respect other people’s time with the characters, etc.)

By this time we were already old hands in this kind of dinner, and quite expert with the rules. All the same, there are always the kids that follow the characters to your table and it would be heartless to tell them anything about it. What we think about THEIR parents is, of course, anybody’s guess…

Even at that late hour the food was fresh, and the dessert selection was really nice. The character interaction was very good. It helped, of course, that this particular dinner has the most classic of Disney’s characters, having a favorite for everyone (Pluto, Donald and Minnie for Valeria, Goofy for Mercedes, Mickey for Daniel and, for me, all of them :rolleyes1 ). They took their time with kids and adults alike, even doing a little dance and show with the kids (and adults) waving their napkins.

A Very elegant chef
553990

This guy was quite charming, giving us a lot of attention

553991

We traveled thousands of miles in order to see our daughter enjoy moments like this… And it was worth it.
553992

Has this place gone to the dogs? (not really)

553993

The owner of the place…
553994

So, having done all the character meals we had planned on this trip, how do I rate them?

Well, the purpose of character meals is, of course, having a good character experience. The food comes second. You brave crowds, noise, meal interruptions, etc. in order to have your daughter meet some strange animals. Any evaluation has to take this in account.

That being said, my winners are… (The envelope, please)

1st. Place: Liberty Tree Tavern.

The best character interaction of all we did!! Good food (albeit a fixed meal course), nice place, wonderful CMs, etc. Unfortunately, Disney decided to suspend this character dinner as of January 2009, so I’m afraid this is not an option anymore. It will be sorely missed, though.

2nd. Place: Garden Grill.
The characters were wonderful and, although the menu is also very limited, the layout of the restaurant allows you to have a good experience without the feeling of a crowded and/or noisy place.

3rd. Place: Crystal Palace.
On one hand, Valeria loves the Winnie the Pooh characters, especially Eeyore. They took their time with the kids (particularly Tigger) and made sure they had a good time. On the other hand, this place has the best food of all (at least at dinner time). The Prime Rib I ate there on our first visit was just superb, and the buffet selection was quite varied. That said, the place is a little bit crowded and, at least on our first visit, the experience was a little stressful. The next time was a lot easier, so I think that part of that stress was due to our inexperience with this kind of dinner.

4th Place: Cinderella’s at 1900 Park Fare and Chef’s Mickey (a tie).
Cinderella’s was a different kind of character meal. First, it was done with humans. Also, the villains were really funny. It gets a fourth place because the food, although good, wasn’t up to par to that of Crystal Palace.

Chef’s Mickey has, of course, the most iconic of Disney’s characters, and this alone gives it high marks. On the other hand, it was quite crowded (at least when we went there).

________________________________

Properly fed and entertained we left the restaurant at about 11pm. I thought it was a good occasion to return to our hotel and rest, but the kids had their own ideas and wanted to do a couple of rides at Epcot, which happened to be that night’s EMH Park.

The best way to get to Epcot was, of course, thru the Monorail. As there weren’t almost any passengers, I asked for the chance of riding up front, which was granted. This was a great hit with the kids, who got their own copilot’s card.

Copilots!!
553995

_________

We arrived quite late to Epcot, but the kids got their wish and rode Mission Space again. This time Mercedes rode the “Orange” side, along with Daniel. I got to ride with Valeria the milder green one.

After Mission Space we went to Test Track, which was quite crowded. It did not matter. Valeria and Daniel got the chance to ride it again, almost at the park’s closing time.

Time to go to sleep (at last!!). Just a couple of Epcot photos and we were ready to leave the park.

Yep. It sure looks a lot better without the wand.

Luis I have not been around for a few months but I am all caught up now on your tr. It looks like you guys had a wonderful trip so far! I can not wait to see your family at AK. I know Valeria LOVED Kali River Rapids!

I know I am late joining your report, but I just wanted you to know it has put a smile on my face this cold rainy day.:)

Luis, I just followed another of your posts over to this thread and have read it through all the way to the end in one sitting. I really enjoyed it.

Your Valeria is a beautiful little girl with a wonderful, beaming smile.

You take terrific pictures. I've been very focussed on Disney this trip, but you've convinced me that we must try to get to Sea World next year!

I've really enjoyed reading this, and will definitely pop in to see it continue. Thank you for sharing your trip with us!

I am another one late to your TR and I have to tell you how much I have enjoyed reading it. Great photos and your daughter is adorable.

Hi Michelle_and_Aaron!!,

I see you are planning a birthday trip!! Wonderful!! Also, we couldn't do Kali the first day, but made sure to go on a later day and yes, Valeria loved it!!

Terrific update, Luis! Hope all is well with you and your family!

Alan

Hi Alan,

Thanks! BTW, that May date is getting nearer!! My best wishes to you and yours...

storybookmum,
Thank you for your kind comments about our princess...And yes, try to visit Sea World in the future!! It is a very interesting experience.
(I just checked the weather in Ontario, Brrr!!! Hope that springs arrives soon!! :) )

Take care.

I am another one late to your TR and I have to tell you how much I have enjoyed reading it. Great photos and your daughter is adorable.

Cazzie,
You DO have a dolphin as an avatar!! Nice! Maybe you should get in contact with storybookmum :)

Thanks for your comments about my daughter and the TR. They are really appreciated.

(I think I'm going to put location pins on Google Earth indicating where my fellow posters are. That should be a good opportunity to teach Valeria a little more about World Geography).

Thanks again to all!! :wave2:

An expedition to Animal Kingdom.

Animal Kingdom! In 2006 Valeria had the opportunity of visiting this park, and still kept nice memories of it. On the other hand, this was to be Daniel’s first visit, and our daughter was eager to be his escort.

After a late breakfast, and with a newbie and his small tour guide in tow, we took our bus directly to the park.

Daniel practicing his “Goofy” faces…
553998

As the day was already getting quite warm, as soon as we arrived we decided to visit the “Tree of Life”, in order to catch a little shadow and a/a.

The "Must Have" Tree picture.
553999

The attraction was very crowded, filled with lots of TGs that, unfortunately, seemed unable to keep the slightest semblance of order. I don’t know if they really had reserved places but, as soon as the theater doors opened they entered in troves, disregarding line order, children, etc., and ran to the middle seats immediately, ignoring the CM’s pleas for going to the other end of the aisle :-(.

Although during Valeria’s first visit she wasn’t very pleased at the spiders falling down the ceiling, this time she took it all with more aplomb. The movie got good reviews all around, even though I would like to see a new film (or at least parts of it) from time to time. We were lucky on exiting the theater without being trampled on, so went in search of a calmer and less dangerous enterprise, mainly Expedition Everest.

Our Objective – EE!
554001

Wonder how they keep all that snow with this heat?
554003

Back in Feb. 2006, I had the chance of riding EE during a soft-opening while Mercedes, who had a mild ear infection that made her very sensitive to that kind of rides, got to stay firmly in ground with Valeria, who was 3 at that time. I really liked the ride and even took a small video, so Mercedes could see what it was all about.

Now, three and a half years later our daughter was ready to check on the Yeti and add that attraction to the list of daring rides she had done on this trip. We were quite lucky as the lines were very short. In fact, I think I would have appreciated a slower line, in order to have a better look of the wonderful theming this attraction has. As it was, I had a very excited small girl in front of me, who was almost running in order to get to the ride as soon as possible…

This is one of the best "themed" attractions at AK.

554014

My, someone must be REALLY angry!!
554015

As you can guess, the attraction’s several drops and sudden movements were quite the hit with our DD who, of course, had to ride it again, this time up front. BTW, I think that the expression we more often heard from Valeria on this trip was “Wheee!” :yay: .

Up front! Up front! I want to be up front!
554016

These guys have a lot of land, don't they?

554017

Having defied the monster twice, off we went to more soothing experiences, this time in the form of Finding Nemo: The Musical. I found it a most delightful and unique show, where the actors/puppeteers and their puppets work together in a beautiful rendition of the movie. Kids tend to focus on the puppets but, at the same time, the puppeteers put on a wonderful performance in their acting and singing. I really recommend it.

A little hungry after seeing all those fish, we turned our steps back to Asia, for today’s ADR, Yak & Yeti.

The promise of “Conditioned air” looked tempting…
554018

BTW, when Valeria asked me why the restaurant was called “Yak & Yeti” I told her that first we were going to eat a Yak (if hungry enough) and, afterwards, the Yeti was going to eat us :) . Fortunately, she knows enough not to pay much attention to his father when he is into his “bad jokes” mode (almost all of the time).

Ok. What about Yak & Yeti? First, let me tell you that I first got to know about this place thru Alan Renfroe’s excellent Trip Report. His wonderful review and photos convinced me that this was a chance not to be missed and, sure enough, he was right on the mark. I really suggest that, if you haven’t done so already, check his TR. In fact, he’s planning another trip in the next few months (he’s already into his pre-trip report). I can’t wait to see those food photos…

Our reservation was planned for 2:30~3pm. When we arrived the place was quite empty, and after a (very) short wait we were escorted to an upper floor table.

The details are excellent…

[Rant on:]
And here is where part of my experience, alas, differs from most of the reviews I have read about Y&Y. Our server was very inattentive. He got “lost” from time to time and we had to remind him several times about our refills. In fact, after a long wait (and asking for them a couple of times) our main dishes were brought to us by another server (who, by the way, was really attentive and amiable in her service). Maybe it was a slow day at the kitchen, but I think we got a sloppy service. The impression I got was that, as we were on the DDP, he did not consider us worthy of a good service. He (the server) was quick with the check, however, pointing out to us that the DDP did not include tips, and suggesting how they could be cancelled (cash, credit card, KTTW card, etc). He, of course, got a tip according to the level of service provided . Maybe what bothered us most was that, up to that moment (and afterwards), the service we had received at Disney (everywhere: Restaurants, Food Court, Resort, etc.) was just outstanding.
[Rant off:]

That said, the rest of our experience was superb!!. Our table was located in a corner, near a window that had a very good view. In fact, I think it must be a nice point to see Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade.

We got an excellent location...
DIS-008-213-image669.jpg

DIS-008-214-image671.jpg

The food was just excellent. Mercedes and Daniel ordered the Baby Back Ribs, and broke all the records eating them. As I posted somewhere else, my wife told me that they were so good that there wasn’t any time to waste.

Valeria asked for the chicken bites, which arrived (IIRC) on a bed of pilaf rice (not her favorite variety, I’m afraid).

Me? I ordered the Mahi Mahi. Mmmm… It was superb. The sauce had just the right spicy flavor. The (white) rice was perfect. In fact, I shared part of it (the rice) with Valeria, who rated it very highly. I did not set any new eating records, as I just wanted to savor my meal all the time I could.

For desserts, Valeria had ice cream (she liked it) while Mercedes and Daniel went for the Brownie Sundae for two (liked it, but it was impossible for them to finish it). I ordered the Fried Wontons. Delicious. Again, a winning selection!!

Overall, our experience at this restaurant was good. I’m convinced the service we got was an anomaly and I’m sure I would return to this place without any second thoughts.

Our meal ended just in time to see the Jungle Parade pass by. It is a nice parade, full of energy and the kids liked it.

Who better at Jammin’ that King Louie?

Land Sailor…
DIS-008-226-image682.jpg

Afterwards, we went to the Pocahontas show. Disney closed this show a few days after we saw it, arguable due to low attendance rates. Maybe they just did not push it (market it) enough. It had a wonderful message, was tastefully done and the kids loved it, especially when the different animals appeared (a raccoon, a porcupine, etc.). Pocahontas even showed the kids seated at the front (Valeria and Daniel included) a snake, which got high and low marks from everyone, depending on how much they liked the reptile. Valeria, for once, decided this was not her favorite kind of animal...
DIS-008-228-image684.jpg

Soon it was time to leave the park. I just wanted to call it a day but the kids, of course, had other ideas….

Evening at the MK…

As it was still early (about 5pm) the kids decided to extend the day doing the rest of the evening at MK.

I found amazing the energy level the children were able to muster every day during this trip, right up to closing time. At that exact moment Valeria, who had been walking animatedly all over the place just seconds before, suddenly realized that she was exhausted, as her “little legs were very tired” (her words) and needed to be carried over. Daughter’s adrenaline and energy spent, Dad got his job clearly defined and, although it’s a joy to have your daughter in your arms (short-lived joy, I’m afraid, they grow so fast!!) I have to reckon that she made the bus lines a little more “interesting”. On the other hand, I suppose I must grateful for the fact that Daniel was able to stay awake until we arrived to our room …

So, it was MK again for us and, who did we find as soon as we arrived? Meeko! Valeria, who was still fascinated with the cute raccoon she had just seen at Pocahontas, was really surprised to find this particular version, and one she could hug, to boot!

Valeria with Meeko.
554019

During our first day at MK Valeria and I had done the “Grand Train Circle”, while Mercedes and Daniel saw a parade. This time, Valeria was adamant that her mom and cousin did the tour as well, as she felt it was an opportunity not to be missed.

Did you know that these are (really) old locomotives (from the 1910s and 1920s)?
554021

As the kids hadn’t visited Toontown yet, we decided to travel there with the train and afterwards walk to the the castle, to see SpectroMagic and Wishes.

If you check closely the bed, you’ll see that Mickey does need reading glasses :)
554022

This kitchen is a mess!!
554023

Before leaving Toontown Valeria and I went to Goofy’s Barnstormer, the first roller coaster she rode back in 2006 and, although she had done bigger and bolder rides during this trip, she enjoyed every moment of it, as it were her first time again…Goofy’s done, we decided to go early to the Castle, in order to have a good view of the parade.

554024

We found a good place on the sidewalk and settled down to wait. Although it has been running for a lot of years, this is easily one of the best parades of WDW, and my particular favorite.

The MC himself...
554025

I have always liked these gals…
554027

As soon as the parade ended we crossed the street, facing now the castle, in order to get a good look at Wishes. We had to wait quite a while, but it was okay, these past few days had been a little bit hectic and just to be able to sit, do a lot of people watching, etc., was a nice break from the routine. Also, during our 2006 visit Valeria and I had gotten “trapped” at Philharmagic’s exit (she saw that show about five times!), and had to watch the fireworks from behind the castle. This time we got to see Tinkerbell flying from to the castle towards Tomorrowland and had a good look at the pyrotechnics above us.

As you can see, I really like the castle :goodvibes
554028

Soon it was time to leave, which we did in the midst of a big crowd. I had a bad moment when someone in front of us decided to light up a smoke, flicking his cigarette’s embers right in front of us. Valeria was using sandals and a couple of times the hot ashes almost fell over her feet. I got very angry about this and had a couple of choice words with the smoker.

We exited thru the Emporium shop, as it always seem easier that way, got thru the park doors and made for the bus stop. It was the end of a long day and we needed the rest for another trip to the jungle.

Next: A second day in AK

englishrose,

Good!! My server problems notwithstanding, I found yak & Yeti superb and yes, the Fried Wontons are really mouth-watering (not to mention the rest of the food :) )!!

Regards,

Luis.

Alan's review is one of the main reasons we are doing Yak and Yeti as well. Aaron can not wait to try that steak and shrimp. I think I will have the ribs your dw and dn enjoyed so much. I will try to restrain myself and not set any records though.:rotfl:

A second day in AK

When I originally planned this trip, I had factored in two days lost due to inclement weather (Florida + September = Hurricanes). To that effect, we had scheduled several repeat days for each of the WDW parks, with an emphasis on MK (mainly, due to Valerias birthday). Fortunately, weather had been kind with us and, with only two park days left in our vacation, and having seen and done almost all we wanted to, it was time to take things in a more relaxed way (if possible :) ).

We were already well settled down in our breakfast routine: Valeria and Mercedes got a table while Daniel and I took their orders. Mercedes went for either an omelet, a Grilled Ham and Cheese or simply scrambled eggs, along with juice and coffee, while Valeria almost invariably wanted to have either the pancakes or the kids waffles (Mickey-shaped, a great hit with her), with a chocolate Nesquik or an orange juice. A couple of time we convinced her to change her diet and eat some cereal or scrambled eggs, but those really were the exception to the norm. Daniel was more basic: a steady diet of chocolate pancakes and strawberry Nesquik. I think he had the Ham & Cheese once, but that must has been a mistake on his part :). Me? Although I think I tried almost every item on the menu at least once, lets just say that Valerias taste for pancakes and/or waffles has some genetic basis

So, for our second day in AK we took our time in getting ready, eating breakfast, etc. and took off for the park at about 11 am. The crowds were very light when we arrived and we found several characters at the entrance, including one of my favorites, Baloo.

Wasnt this guy in Splash Mountain?
554029

I just hope that suit has air conditioning
554030

I had read a lot of good things about The Festival of the Lion King show, so this was one of the first items in todays To-Do list. Wow! Nicely done, they do a wonderful job entertaining the audience, the costumes are beautiful and the performers put on a lot of energy into the show. A must see.

Exiting the Lion King show, it was time to see some more of the real animals, so off we went to check on the Kilimanjaro Safari. On our way we found several characters:

Daisy got herself a nice, shaded area
554031

Mmm What do I write here?
554032

Valeria and Daniel liked Terk a lot.
554033

And so did I
554034

At Harambe station Mercedes found some guys playing drums and inviting some of the ladies to go along, and couldnt resist the temptation of dancing a little to their beat. I was really sorry for the rest of the gals, as they didnt really had a chance :) . Drums are a big part of Venezuelan folklore, particularly near the coast, and Mercedes is a BIG fan of them. Also, my DW carries, as most Venezuelan do, the rhythm in her blood, and she really likes dancing a lot. Too bad she married a tone-deaf guy, with two left feet, and who has even to check the dictionary to make sure of the right spelling of the word Rhythm.

Mercedes at Harambe Station
554036

Well, drums notwithstanding, the real reason we were at Harambe was to take a tour with the Kilimanjaro Safari. In contrast to our 2006 visit, this time the lines were very short and we took our bus without much delay.

The safari was, as always, very interesting. We got to see some rhinos up close and the ever present (but beautiful) gazelles. Also, we met some nice giraffes (a favorite of mine) along the way. We even saw a glimpse of a male lion over a (pride) rock but, sensible guy as he was, he was dozing away the heat
554037

554038

After the Safari we went to Rafikis Planet Watch / Conservation Station, a first for any of us. The place is a nice break from the rest of the park. There are several interesting exhibits for children (and adults) alike, as when we were shown a big scorpion. Im afraid I forgot to take a photo of the critter but it was, at least, as big as my hand

You can find various characters along the way, as well as some sound booths that offer the perfect opportunity to rest a couple of minutes in a very relaxed mood. Particularly nice is one that recreates the sounds of a rain forest.

Can I take it home?

554039

Didn't we see you before?
100-1426.jpg

The Cricket!!
100-1424.jpg

The only caveat I found for this section of the park is that the only way to get there is with a train that, at least when we got there, gets VERY crowded. I think we waited almost an hour in line. Sigh

I almost forgot to write that, after Rafiki's, we went to the Kali River Rapids ride. This was a first for us, and even Mercedes got in the act (that's the reason we don't have photos of the ride :) ). It was fun and everybody had a good time.

After the rapids we made our way to Dinosaur Land, U.S.A. During Valerias first visit (2006) all she was able to do was visit the Bone yard. Now, she was old (and tall!) enough to ride Dinosaur and that was what we set to do. We all liked the ride, although our DD had one of the dinosaurs leap right at her, and almost jumps out of the vehicle herself :)

Exiting the park we found they were performing that days Goodnight kiss. This is a way to say goodbye to guests and it was a good hit with everybody, as the characters waved, gestured a lot, etc. When we were there it was (I think) a new feature for AK.

Goodbye!!
100-1438.jpg

This has been a wonderful trip

Next: Saying goodbye to MK.
