What does an egg cream taste like?

I have heard of them, but I grew up and live in the South so I have never come across one. I have heard of them, thanks to a little sit-com I watched in middle school called "My Two Dads" where the characters were always at Klawicki's having an egg creme/cream or a chocolate egg cream. I know they are popular in the Northeast (NY/NJ).

Anyway, I have always wondered.

Is it like eggnog?

It is a little piece of heaven on earth!:cloud9:

They taste like chocolate milk soda or vanilla milk soda. I think that is the best way I can describe them. We used to make them as kids all the time.

Hmm, wonder which thread that came from?? LOL

Mouse House Mama described it just like I was going to. It's like chocolate soda. I've never had the vanilla. They are mostly popular up North, I believe. You can't find them in my neck of the woods. The only reason I know how they taste is because my dad ordered a 4 pack off the internet a few years back.

They're so good. it's just chocolate syrup, milk and seltzer water. Add a scoop of ice cream and you have an old fashioned Ice cream soda.:goodvibes

This.

You can have one with vanilla syrup too.

NO eggs in an egg cream. I heard that it is because when blended together the "head" is very foamy like drinks made with egg whites usually are.

I posted the recipe for it the other day on the Frozen Hot Chocolate thread:

There's no egg in it. Not sure why it's called that. It's a north east coast, regional thing. But, I *thinK* it might have been invented in Brooklyn, NY.

It's similar in ingredients to the frozen hot chocolate. Put in about a quarter cup of the evaporated milk or melted ice cream, a couple of huge squirts of the chocolate syrup, (adjust to taste,) then fill up the rest of the tall glass with cold seltzer or club soda. Stir slowly to mix, or it froths up and foams all over the place.

It tastes like a chocolate ice cream soda or a chocolate soda float without the floating scoop of ice cream. :drinking1

A vanilla egg cream tastes great, too. I make it with the vanilla flavored syrup I get from Starbucks to flavor my coffee, :) plus milk & seltzer.
