Frizzy Hair! Help!?

Ok...so I've got long, thick hair which usually has no problem hanging poker straight (the way I like it! ) with just a quick blow-dry...however, every time we go to Florida I end up looking like I just stuck my finger in a light socket! Most times I just end up putting it in braided pigtails, but I'd really like to not look like a 12 year old when DBF and I are at some of our nicer TS's...So, any ladies out there have suggestions as to how to beat the humidity? I live in Ohio and it's humid here too, but it's crazy there!

I live here in Florida and here is my advice--

I have thick naturally curly hair, so I would say here you MUST have some sort of gel/mousse and hair spray. You just have to.

When I wear it straight, I still use products, but my straightening iron really helps a lot. Try flat ironing it, and then using something light like Aveda's Air Spray to keep it going.

We live in Pittsburgh. It can get humid here, but nothing like in Florida. We went in January. One minute after leaving the hotel room is all it takes to be curly again. My advice: be curly and forget it. Just enjoy WDW. You probably look great in curls anyway. You can go back to the straight look when you get home. I wear my hair straight too, but I get ALOT of compliments when I leave it go curly.

Well, if your visiting any time soon, it won't be a problem. We have absolutely no humidity. If it were any dryer, the whole state would go up in a flash. For the first time since I moved to Florida, I'm having to put lotion on my legs to get rid of the large cracks appearing.

Seriously, we haven't had rain for so long. The entire state is in a drought. Your biggest problem maybe having your hair smell like smoke from brush fires.

i can empathize all too well. i usually visit wdw in august and the only way i can keep my hair under control is by pulling it back (which i hate doing). the humidity undoes the effects of my professional-quality straightner within minutes, and products don't really help. i have visited a couple of times in april and may, and my hair definitely looks better then!

another, more drastic option is thermal reconditioning. i used to get this done (my hair is curly), and it permanently straightens hair until it grows back in. with this, my hair stayed straight and un-frizzy when i visited wdw, but i stopped getting it done because it is very expensive!

Although I don't live in Florida, we have the "crazy" humidity here as well.

I have very thick hair, but it is naturally straight. I don't have to worry about mine "going curly", but it will get frizzy on the really bad days. I think it also helps that I have oily skin/hair. The natural oils work better than any product. I wash my hair everyday...but if you have dry hair, it might help to wash it less frequently (I know...ewwww). Just a suggestion.

I usually keep my hair cut above my shoulders. That seems to help. When it does grow any longer, I just twist it up (I love those giant claw clips). That often looks better than a ponytail...especially when you're going out for the evening.

Born naturaly curly, I got sick of it so a couple of years ago I found a home perming kit a Mijers for around $4.00 GREAT Enough packs to do touch ups every now and then. I also use a straight iron and products too. But I love those perms. My DD13 can't stand the smell for the day though.

Someone on these boards once posted about a "wet-to-straight" iron by Remington. We bought one. For us it takes 45 minutes on wet hair or 30 minutes on dry hair to achieve stick straight, very sleek and shiny, beautiful hair on my teenage DDs (their thick hair is about half way between shoulder blades and waist in length, maybe closer to waist length). Without it they have frizzy curly and frizzy curly/wavy hair, which I think looks beautiful, but I'm not a teenage girl, so I can't be right.

This product gets out so much water (watch out for the steam) that I think their hair will stay straight even in Florida. (Won't be back until December to test the theory.) Not that I really want them taking an extra 30-45 minutes to get ready! Even though you have naturally straight hair, it might help you to get out ALL the moisture before you start the day.

Just a thought.

But personally, I'd rather go curly and not waste the time!

I am also in the curly hair club. Here what I do:

Don't let your hair dry without putting product in it first. Whether you air dry, or blow dry.

I use "Split Personality" hair serum, by Head Games. And when in the real humind weather I also use mousse.

When possible I try to let my hair dry naturally in the air conditioning beofre heading our into the humidity. If you have to blow dry, use a diffuser, and be sure it's completely dry before heading out.

I use hats when it's really humid. I love hats anyway, so it's not always a "bad hair day" thing for me. And not boring baseball hats. Cute, fun, bright summer hats in all different styles.

Last...as another poster said...just go with it. I used to really get upset by my hair. I use to curse it, and do everything possible to straighten it. But I've learned to love it. EMBRACE THE CURLS!!

As a curly hair frizz girl, beware of the Remington wet to dry. It really depends on the texture of your hair. Try to try someone elses or find out about the return policy first. I tried my sister's and my hair frizzed to high heaven. I looked like a jungle woman.

Just keep an emergency kit with you in FL: a cute hat/scarf, and ponytail holder. It's what we all keep down here!

It also doesnt weight down the curls, it separates them and defines the shine

No kidding! I feel like everyday my face might crack into a thousand pieces. Never in my life have I used so much moisturizer. I'm doing a rain dance!!!

Other than that---when it is humid (please rain, please rain), as my hair is naturally curly---you can product the heck out of it and use a flat iron. I like the stuff made by big sexy hair called "flat out". But, to be honest with you, in the summer, I just give up and let it go!

This is why I have CHI---I always straighten my hair. I really hate it when it rains, because then my hair looks like a chia pet--the more humid it gets the more my hair grows

Why not do your hair up in the Bo Derek in the movie "10" style?

Sure it's not Jamaica, but seeing women with that hair style brings back some stimulating memories from my youth.

I travel to Hedonism a few times a year for a quickie vacation and the style is still very popular in the warmer beach style locations.

Another member of the curlies here. Be glad you can straighten hair most other times an go with the flow. I learned years ago not to fight my curls that's when I really really get the frizzies goin on and a afro to boot. i know better than to ever try to use a hair brush on my hair. Never can I use a pic on it unless it's wet as if I do I get a huge afro, not just big hair but I can pull the top up and actually make an afro.

The curlies do have their advantages I can ride 500 miles on Dyna and arrive with decent lookin hair without ever puttin hair up. It's wash and wear. No need to pack curlers or curlin iron blow dryer nothin but my pick and my bouncey cream that is a daily leave in conditioner. My DD's often look at me tell me how great my hair looks an not to fool with it that day as I'd never get it lookin that good again if I tried.

In fact the night before DD's wedding I was out riding Dyna and got up the mornin of wedding knowing there was gonna be a hairdresser at the church to do my hair so I didn't do my hair I'd been told not to wash it that day. It was funny hairdresser took one look got out the hair spray that I didn't even need gave me a few quick sprays and rearranged a couple of hairs and I was done.

I also have curly frizzy hair that I straighten daily. Here is what I do. I just did it to day in fact to prepare for our trip in 2 weeks.

I went to the salon and had an "anti-curl" done. It is like a reverse perm. They are wonderful my last one lasted about 6 months. I usually do this in May to get through the summer here in Massachusetts. It can get pretty humid here too.

The anti-curl takes away the friz and curl from your hair. I have wavy curly hair. I can usually get my hair straight using a flat iron during the rest of the year. It is just the summers that are tough. I don't know if it would work as well on someone with really curly hair.

Oh, and BTW it isn't cheap. It will cost you about $90.

I live in the tropics and it's been extremely humid for the past 6 weeks because of constant rain. I use a de-frizzing "serum" which name I can't recall but you can get it in the hair salon or the drug store sells anti-frizz stuff too! The trick to the "serum" is that it contains silicon which flattens the fizzies and makes your hair shinier at the same time.

Hi! I live in Florida and I know how hard it is to keep your hair straight. I have very thick hair with alot of wave in it. The best product I have found is called Super Skinny Serum by Paul Mitchell. I can't live without it! The trick is when your hair is very wet you need to pull it and comb it though, and right away start blow drying. I use a Chi Brush (expensive, but worth every penny) and can get my hair done now with in 15 minutes, no problem- and it turns out super straight, and stays straight all day !
Also, a good hair cut helps too. If you have extra heavy hair, get it texturized-it helps alot!

What helps me is this:

1. My Straightning Iron - the good ceramic one - $50 at Sally's.

2. Apply any Gel/Mousse before blow drying.

3. Herbal Essence Anti Frizz Spray - just like a hairspray - works great - pretty cheap too - put some in a little bottle to keep with you all day - apply as needed.

4. Also - I don't wash my hair everyday. I let the natural oils get in it and by the second day - not so frizzy. Excess washing dries your hair out anyway. Just get up - soak it with some H.E. Anti frizz spray and run through straightener again.
