Fried Okra-Yay or Nay?

I love fried okra!!! I'd never had it til a couple of years ago when I tried it once at Cracker Barrel. Yum! I can't believe I went almost 20 years of my life without ever having tried it!

Okra in any way shape or form is a definite YAY in my house!

And even better it's almost okra season so hopefully the farmers markets start having it SOON!!!!!

I love fried okra when it is done up to the point of being crunchy so that it tastes less like okra and mostly like fried. Haha. Can't stand 'em when slimy, though, and never had any desire to attempt a pickled okra, though I've had many other pickled Southern vegetables.

Deep frying makes almost anything good! I'm still waiting for some deep fried bacon, though. lol Talk about a heart attack waiting to happen.

My father in law likes to say that the North didn't need to fight in the Civil War in order to win, they could have just left us alone until we all ate ourselves into heart disease then marched in and taken over without a shot fired. lol

I love fried okra. I grew up on the west coast and had never heard of okra before I moved to TN. Love it though. I also love hush puppies, real BBQ, and sweet tea.

Did you ever eat Campbell's Chicken Gumbo Soup? Okra is the little wagon wheel type vegetable in the soup. It's a long pod type vegetable with seeds inside. Grows to be about 2 or 3 inches long and about 1/2" in diameter. Fried okra is breaded with cornmeal and fried up after it has been sliced into sections. So you get a breaded vegetable, about 1" all the way around. Very good.

I never would have thought of ranch dressing either but I used to work at Sonny's BBQ where if it's fried, you dip it in ranch dressing and let me tell you, I can hardly eat it without it now. Not to mention they have the best ranch dressing ever. I definitely think you should go have some okra and ranch there. If you go, go to the one in carrollwood right off of Dale Mabry. Delicious.

I'll try that. I pass that Sonnys all the time but have never eaten there. My dh is picky about bbq.

BLECK! I've tried them every which way you can imagine. Even the Sonny's way fried with ranch. I'd bite down and the hairs would stick up on my neck. Yeesh.

Okra is evil and must be destroyed.

You never had fresh okra fried. I slice mine thinner (1/2) than restaurants do so when fried it is crunchy, not in the least slimy.

Yes, on occassion. BUT - it has to be out (I will not cook it) and it has to be cooked right.

I tried cooking Okra in a recipe once - never again!!!! - the "boogery" aspect was quite a shock for this northerner!!!

We are huge fried okra fans here =) My fave fried okra is from Bush's Chicken in Waco Texas. It's the stuff dreams are made of.
