Frequent Flier Miles for kids?

I have traveled quite a bit, but usually purchase tickets with whichever airline has the best rate, therefore frequent flier miles with a particular airline have never really added up enough to be useful.

However, it seems that I have ended up with several United flights recently and am beginning to accumulate some miles. However, I'm wondering about how FF miles work for kids? Since I purchased my own ticket, and those for both of my kids, can't all 3 tickets be credited to my account? Or, do I need to open separate accounts for both teens?

If so, can these be combined for one reward, or do the kids each need to accumulate enough miles in order to quality for redemption?

You have to be the person flying in order to earn the miles. Who pays doesn't count at all. So yes, each child needs their own account.

If your'e getting a lot of miles on your own, you can always book *for others* using your miles, FYI. Then just wait until the kids have miles enough for their tickets to start using theirs. But I think United has a program where you can transfer and/or buy miles if you're short by a bit. The info should be in the Mileage Plus info on the website.
