Freezing Milk??

I have - mainly when we go camping to keep it cold for a few days! I believe the cream separates a bit when it freezes, so you have to shake it up a bit.

I have also frozen a 1/2 container of milk for kids lunches, then add the other half in the morning, and by lunch time they have nice cold milk for lunch.

we've always had the milk seperate as it melts. Is there a better percentage to use?? Does 2% work better than whole?

We started freezing milk back when it was almost $4 a gallon here. 2% worked out fine just had to shake it up a little after it defrosted. Just remember to open it up and pour a little out in order to keep it from exploding as it expands in the freezer.

I second this. I have frozen 2% in the past very successfully and if you poor a little out before freezing and shake it up when it thaws your fine, I cannot tell a difference.

I agree with PP's let a little out before you freeze it,i forgot last time and the container bulged out and would not set on the counter. It was like a weeble, it wabbled and tipped over.
Also I use 2% to freeze and shake it up really well.
My Mom like to pour a glass of milk and put it in the freeze for about 45 minutes. It is kinda like ice cream. She (and her 9 sisters) used to do this when she was a girl, in the winter time they would put the milk out on the back porch to freeze and make "ice cream"

how long can you freeze it for? and once it defrosts how long does it last?

Does the container matter when freezing milk, for instance the plastic see through or the non see thrugh plastic container (like oj comes in).
Thank you.

We freeze milk all the time, fat percentage doesn't matter. As others have suggested make sure you don't put a full container in the freezer. We pour some into a partially full one then freeze it at about 2/3 full. Take it out the day before you need it and thaw it in the fridge, shake it up and nobody will know the difference.

We freeze it all the time and never pour any out. True...it gets kinds wobbly when you take it out frozen, but after it thaws the container is fine.
