I am not a DVC member, but rented points from someone to use their AKV in Oct. Will we still get the free wifi?

In other words, you may get it or you may not (but wired, not wireless). Only members are to get it for free. If they don't charge you, consider it pixie dust. But if they do charge you - and sometimes even DVC members get it charged on their bill in error - you won't have any recourse and will have to pay it.

Has anyone ever brought a wireless router with them to hook up in the room? We probably will only bring one netbook but there will be at least a few iPod touches that would like internet connection as well.

I bring my router from home and use it. If you want to buy a router just for travel, make sure you set it up at home first, setting the router name, passwords, etc.

we have an Apple airport express that we bring with, easy to use and small

In December while waiting for ME in the waiting/check-in at OKW my laptop showed a max signal strength but a password protected connection.

we bring a router so both hubby and i can get online if we want at the same time... it also worked great on our last trip in a 2br since the jack is in the master bedroom that all parties with us could get online and didn't need to come into the MB but could stay on the couch or where ever they happened to be.

not that it would have been a huge deal as the guests with us were my brother and his family but if we were there with friends we wouldn't necessarily want them coming to our room all the time to get online.

I am renting points as well and have seen this question asked many times. From reading other posts I know that sometimes renters/guests receive it free and sometimes not. Here is my question . . . is there anyway to know before you use it if they are giving it to you free or if you will need to pay? I ask because if they do happen to give it to me free then I would love to use it to keep up with email, etc. But if it is not free, it's not worth the extra money for me. Any way to know?

Unless you are tech-savvy, I would definitely recommend getting a separate router/access point for travel use. Some may think they can just unplug their wireless AP from home and take it along. Not recommended, IMO.

I brought a spare unit from home and ended up having to reset it to the manufacturer's default settings before it would work with the Disney service. If that unit was still in use at home, chances are I would have had to re-configure it again upon my return. Again, maybe not a difficult task for a techie but it will take time and could lead to a great deal of frustration.

Some manufacturers make small "travel routers." These can be appealing due to their compact size. But if you aren't worried about the size (ours stays in the Owner's Locker) any old unit should get the job done.

hmmm...I wouldn't consider myself much of a techie but when I set up my wireless router at my house, it wasn't much more than plugging it in and then plugging in my ethernet cable from my cable modem...

Some are that easy. Others are not. Depends upon the ISP and the hardware.

If you have to reset the unit to its defaults, settings like the SSID and security keys have to be re-established. If you accidentally use different settings than at home, it may take more time to get the laptop or iPod to connect.

By default the access point is almost certain to be unsecured. Security features normally need to be enabled. You'll want to go in and enable those security features.

Also note that you typically cannot run the management console of a router/AP using something like an iPod or iPhone. If you have any trouble getting the wireless device to work, you will need to have a laptop available in order to tweak the device settings.

Free internet is a member perk. So if you are not a member, you should plan on not getting free internet. However, if you do, consider yourself lucky. And if you don't want to risk having to pay for it, don't use it.
