I think I may have a virus or worm, my computer is really messing up. Is there a place for a reliable free virus scan, removal????

Thanks!

No free scan is going to do as good a job of finding and removing bad stuff as a real AV, which you really should have along with a firewall (there is a good free firewall available from Zone Labs at ZoneAlarm.)

That said, stuff happens. I've used free online scans from Panda and Trend Micro before and they're pretty good:

Panda Active Scan

Trend Micro Housecall

You always can run both just to be more certain. Good luck!

I just googled "free virus protection" . It listed alot of different ones. I don't know if one is better than another, the AVAST one sounded good. I didn't read through them all.

These have been good for us and they were free

Windows Defender

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

AVG Anti Virus/Anti Spyware

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Also do you know when you got the virus??? If you have an idea and you are running Windows XP it has an option to go and do a system restore where you can restore your system to a date BEFORE you got the virus. It usually works really well BUT some viruses have been known to be programmed to turn that feature off when you get the virus so it may not be possible.

I had a really nasty one that I got and nothing would remove it and it disabled the ability to do a system restore but thankfully DH is a computer network administrator and was able to blow out my system and re-install what I needed! Hopefully you don't have to go that far!!!!

It looks like we were posting at the same time, so here's a bump to make sure you see my answer.

These are free:

Avast anti-virus = http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

Comodo firewall = http://www.filehippo.com/download_comodo/

This is paid, but with free 30 day trial:

Webroot spysweeper = http://www.webroot.com/consumer/downloads/

Getting rid of viruses is different from getting rid of worms. For viruses, use the anti virus, but for worms, you'll have to use a spyware cleaner. You'll probably need a combination of spyware cleaners. Go to www.filehippo.com under anti spyware and grab ad-aware, spybot, and spyware blaster. Install and run each of those. If it's still there, grab also cwshredder and run that.

Sometimes it helps if you tell us what is happening to your computer - because the symptoms can show what spyware/worm it may be and what the fix could be, because sometimes there are worms/trojans that are ridiculously difficult to clean up without some IT knowledge.
